Box Score 2 Harrisonburg, Va. - Despite having the most kills as a team in its past 78 regular-season matches, the Robert Morris University volleyball team could not find a way to finish off Lehigh as the Mountain Hawks recorded a 3-2 victory in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Sinclair Gymnasium as part of the JMU Invitational.
The Colonials were unable to recover in their second match of the day as host James Madison, a squad that was picked second in its conference preseason poll, took out Robert Morris in three sets Saturday night.
Even though RMU could not pull out a victory Saturday, junior outside hitter Lindsey Monger (Rising Sun, Md. / Rising Sun) was named to the All-Tournament Team for the Colonials for her strong all-around play this weekend. Monger was one dig shy of posting double-doubles in all three matches and finished the weekend with a team-leading 50 kills in the event while also contributing 41 digs. She knocked down at least 14 kills in three straight matches for the first time in her career and also totaled over 3.15 digs per set for the weekend.
In the day's first match, Robert Morris had an advantage over Lehigh in many major statistical categories, including kills, hitting percentage, assists and digs, but it fell short of its second-consecutive five-set victory. RMU pounded down 63 kills for the match, its most in the regular season since October 2008 and its highest mark against any non-conference opponent since 2007.
Monger tallied 14 kills and a match-high 21 digs against the Mountain Hawks to record her 10th-career double-double. She was aided on the offensive end by senior captain Hannah Veith (Columbus, Ohio / Worthington) who drilled a match-high 17 kills and hit a team-high .351 with four rejections. One day after reaching the 300-block plateau for her career, Veith posted a career-high 34 combined kills in back-to-back matches.
Junior opposite hitter Amanda Craig (Houston, Texas / St. Agnes Academy) notched her first-double-double since her freshman campaign by providing 11 kills and a career-high 18 digs. Craig, who hit .310 against Lehigh, also added five assists and four blocks. Freshman setter Hannah Hoffman (Parker, Colo. / Ponderosa) directed the offense with a match-high 44 assists and added six kills of her own along with six digs and three aces.
Robert Morris jumped out to an early 6-2 edge in the opening set, but Lehigh refused to let it get out of hand and soon evened the score at 11. The squads split the ensuing 20 points evenly, with neither team leading by more than two over that time frame, to knot the opener, 21-21. Although RMU claimed the next point to push ahead, the Mountain Hawks won four consecutive exchanges to take the lead in the match.
Lehigh appeared to have a chance to take a two-set advantage when it grabbed an early 11-7 edge in the second set. The Mountain Hawks still led by three, 16-13, past the midway mark when the Colonials found their stride. RMU then closed the set on a 12-4 run, aided by six kills, two aces and two blocks in that stretch, and leveled the match at one set apiece with an ace by Craig.
After Robert Morris had an early 7-5 lead in set three, Lehigh won six consecutive exchanges to take a four-point advantage. The Colonials and Mountain Hawks divided the subsequent 16 points equally, leaving Lehigh closing in on a victory, holding a 19-15 edge. RMU then sprung to life, using a 7-1 run to take a two-point lead, and held on for a 25-23 victory.
The fourth set was the tightest of the bunch as it featured 15 ties with neither side leading by more than three points. The teams were deadlocked after 28 points were played before RMU used three consecutive kills to open up a 17-14 lead. Robert Morris still led by three, 20-17, when Lehigh bounced back, winning four straight points to retake the lead, 21-20. The squads began alternating points and were tied at 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24 until the Mountain Hawks finally were able to claim back-to-back rallies to force a fifth set.
Lehigh took an early 5-2 lead in the final set and held on for the duration of the shortened game to claim the match as RMU was unable to equalize the Mountain Hawks in the waning moments and dropped the decisive set, 15-9.
Freshman outside hitter Erica Robb (Novi, Mich. / Novi) added nine kills and six digs for RMU against Lehigh.
After going five sets in each of its first two matches in the tournament, Robert Morris could not match the level of the strong Dukes squad in its finale.
James Madison jumped on top early in the first set as it used an 8-1 run to break an early 2-2 tie, taking a seven-point advantage. The Dukes maintained a similar margin for a large portion of the set before closing the opening game on a 7-3 spurt to claim a 25-14 victory.
Robert Morris was able to hang with the hosts for longer in the second game before James Madison took a commanding edge. The Dukes led just 11-9 after 20 points, but utilized a pair of 4-0 bursts in quick succession to move their lead to 21-13 as they held on for a nine-point victory in the second stanza.
After dropping each of the first two sets, RMU displayed strong determination by batting the Dukes throughout the third set. Trailing 8-5 early in the game, Robert Morris used a 7-2 run to take the lead and prompt a James Madison timeout. The hosts responded in kind by winning seven of the next nine points to retake the lead, 17-14. However, the Colonials fought right back and knotted the match at 18. The teams were then tied at 20, 21 and 22 before James Madison won three of the next four rallies to complete the match.
Monger led the squad with 15 kills against James Madison and added nine digs. Hoffman tallied a match-high 25 assists while freshman libero Melissa Bograd (Lemont, Ill. / Lemont) registered a match-high 13 digs after totaling 15 against the Mountain Hawks.
With its opening two tournaments now complete, Robert Morris will resume play this Tuesday, Sept. 6, with its home opener against crosstown rival Duquesne. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
