Pair of Colonials Up For Hockey Humanitarian Award

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Jan. 16, 2012 A pair of Robert Morris hockey players have been nominated for this year's BNY Mellon Wealth Management Hockey Humanitarian Award – a national accolade given out annually to the college hockey player whose efforts to better their communities continue to stand out. Senior forward Furman South (Sewickley, Pa. / Bay State Breakers) is the first member of the Colonial men's hockey team to be nominated for the award while senior forward Brianna Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / NCCP Raiders) will be the second nominee for the RMU women's hockey team in as many years.

In four years with the men's hockey program, South has been one of the Colonials' most dedicated student-athletes in the classroom, in the community and on the ice. The pre-med senior has worked as a volunteer with several local hospitals and clinics as well as numerous organizations over his college career including Special Olympics. South has also worked to develop youth hockey in the Pittsburgh area, volunteering with local teams and camps in addition to participating in “Hockey in the Hood” – a program that gives inner-city children an opportunity to skate and play hockey. Academically, South is a three-time all-academic award winner, a two-time recipient of the Robert Morris University Dean's Scholar Award and a five-time member of the RMU Dean's List. A 2011 Academic All-America candidate, South earned the 2010-11 Atlantic Hockey Sportsman of the Year award.  In 117 career games, South has tallied 30 points (11 goals, 19 assists) for the Colonials.

Delaney has contributed her time to a variety of events and causes while also maintaining a strong academic record at Robert Morris. She has helped out with the nearby Mooncrest After-School Program, a program in which elementary school students receive assistance and guidance with homework and mental and social development. Delaney has also worked with the Special Olympics of Pennsylvania, using her time to aid individuals with disabilities. Delaney also has worked with the Boys & Girls Club of Pittsburgh and the Big Brothers and Big Sisters Program. Delaney is an elementary education major who has made the Dean's List every semester she has attended RMU and has also earned CHA All-Academic Team honors in each of her first three seasons. A 2010 Patty Kazmaier Award nominee, Delaney broke the Colonials' all-time points record earlier this season and currently tops the charts with 112. She holds RMU's all-time assist mark with 63 and has registered 48 goals.

RMU women's hockey alum Whitney Pappas was the Colonials first-ever finalist for the award last year.

The BNY Mellon Wealth Management Hockey Humanitarian Award winner is selected by the organization's board of directors. Finalists for the award will be announced in late January with the 2012 BNY Mellon Wealth Management Hockey Humanitarian Award winner earning recognition in a ceremony on Friday April 6 as part of the 2012 NCAA Men's Frozen Four in Tampa, Fla.
