Home Win Streak Snapped By Miami

Moon Township, Pa. / Charles L. Sewall Center - The Robert Morris University women's basketball team saw its nine-game home win streak come to an end Monday night with a 61-50 loss to Miami (Ohio) at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The Colonials had been perfect both at home (6-0) and against Mid-American Conference teams (3-0) before Monday's result sent them to 8-5 at the end of the non-conference schedule. The RedHawks win their sixth consecutive game to improve to 10-3.

Senior Mary Durojaye (London, England / Barking Abbey (British National Team)) scored all of her points and grabbed all but one of her rebounds in the second half to finish with 13 points and 11 caroms to record her fifth double-double of the year. She went 5-10 from the field after playing just 10 minutes in the first half due to foul trouble.

Freshman Catherine Matthews (Barrington, R.I. / Barrington) tallied a team-best and season-high 14 points coming off the bench to play 32 minutes. The rookie finished 4-for-5 on three-pointers and added four rebounds in her best game of the year. Sophomore Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Nea Smyrni (Greek National Team)) had 10 rebounds to go with eight points.

Courtney Osborn led all scorers with 20 points for Miami. She also added five assists and six rebounds. Kirsten Olowinski recorded a double-double with 14 points and 17 rebounds.

The Colonials spotted the RedHawks an 8-0 lead, turning the ball over six times in the first five minutes. Matthews hit the first RMU shot 4:23 into the game, burying a three from the right wing. Miami held on to the eight-point lead as Osborn scored 10 points in the first 10 minutes.

A pair of Osborn free throws made the score 21-13, Miami, with 8:37 left in the first half.  A trey from the left corner by Spanou started a 12-1 run that featured six points from Spanou and ended with a three-point play by junior April Williams (Bronx, N.Y. / Murry Bergtraum (Monroe College)) that gave the Colonials a 25-22 lead with just under four minutes to play in the opening half.

The RedHawks scored the final six points prior to break, however, and carried a 28-25 lead into the break.

The Colonials missed five of their first six shots in the second half and it was a sign of things to come as they connected on just 8-of-40 shots (20.0 percent) in the final 20 minutes. The RedHawks stretched the lead to seven points with the first four points of the second period. They would hold the margin between eight and four points for the first 12 minutes of the second half.

Leading 50-45, four points from Hannah Robertson helped an 11-3 run that ended with Miami holding a 61-48 lead with 1:40 to play. A Durojaye putback with 1:19 left to play was the final point of the game as the RedHawks took the 11-point win.

Robert Morris shot 24.3 percent (17-70) for the game and was 32.0 percent (8-25) on long-range shots. Miami converted at 48.1 percent in the second half to finish at 38.5 percent (20-52) for the game. They went 17-23 (73.9 percent) from the charity stripe.

The Colonials jump back into Northeast Conference play for the remainder of the season beginning with a contest at Central Connecticut State Jan. 7. Tip-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
