Box Score Oxford, Ohio / Millett Hall - A 15-2 run to
start to the second half helped Miami (Ohio) to a 70-56 victory over the Robert
Morris University women's basketball team at Millett Hall in Oxford, Ohio
Thursday night. Junior forward Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Nea Smyrni)
recorded her second double-double of the year as she finished with 22 points
and 14 rebounds for a Colonial team that slips to 0-3 on the year.
"We came out to a great start and sustained a high-level of play for the first 20 minutes only down by two points at half," said RMU head coach Sal Buscaglia. "We're short on numbers, so we have to learn how to fight through fatigue as our rotations are very limited. In addition, everybody has to contribute at a high level. But, I must say, that each player is giving everything they have. With that in mind and being such a young team we are getting better each and every game. We just have to keep believing in ourselves and the wins will come."
Spanou now has 997 career points and 34 career
double-doubles. Freshman Ashley Ravelli (Milano, Italy / The Hun School) had
her best performance of the young season scoring 10 points and getting three
steals despite foul trouble that limited her to 17 minutes. Junior Kelly Hartwell (Woodbridge, Va. / Gar-Field) added nine points, four assists and four
rebounds.
Senior forward Anna Gailite (Riga, Latvia / Riga Secondary
#47) had four blocks to move into second all-time at RMU with 114 career
blocks. She ties RMU Hall of Famer Elise James on that list.
Courtney Osborn scored a game-high 23 points and chipped in
six steals and three assists to lead Miami who improves to 21. Kirsten
Olowinski scored 10 points, all in the second half, after getting in early foul
trouble.
The Colonials surged out to a 13-5 lead as Spanou hit a set
of free throws and a three-pointer just before Ravelli knocked in her second
three-pointer of the game. Miami answered with a 10-2 run as the RedHawks tied
the game at 15-15 with three-balls by Haley Robertson and Osborn.
The teams traded baskets over the final 10 minutes of the
first half. A three-pointer by Mataly gave the Colonials a 28-25 lead with 5:51
to play. The next seven points belonged to Miami who surged to a four-point
lead before carrying a 32-30 margin into the break.
Miami opened the second half on a 15-2 run, taking a
commanding 45-32 lead after back-to-back layups by Kirsten Olowinski with 11:50
to play. The Colonials would never again cut the margin to single digits as
they turned the ball over 15 times in the second half. The RedHawks converted
those into 18 points to pull away.
Robert Morris travels to Iowa City, Iowa next to take on the
Iowa Hawkeyes next Tuesday, Nov. 20. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m. Eastern in
the first meeting between the two programs.
