Box Score Moon Township, Pa. / Charles L. Sewall Center - The Robert Morris University women's basketball team rallied from a first
half deficit before eventually succumbing to Stony Brook, 56-48, in a
non-conference game at the Charles L. Sewall Center Wednesday night.
Junior Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Nea Smyrni) recorded
her third double-double of the season and tied her career-high with 16
rebounds. She also had 13 points, leading RMU (0-6) in both categories.
Freshman Lou Mataly (Toulouse, France / Lycee-Bellevue) hit her first three
three-pointers of the game and finished with nine points.
"I'm extremely disappointed in the way we started this game
so slowly," said 10th year RMU head coach Sal Buscaglia. "We dug
ourselves a big hole and we can't afford to do that, especially with the
limited number of players we have available. We were able to fight back from
that 13-point deficit, but just couldn't get over the hump as we were unable to
get a key rebound or basket.
"I am disappointed with the lack of rebounding from most of
our players. I do, however, still believe in these young players and think they
will be a solid foundation for the rest of this year and future seasons as
well," said Buscaglia.
A slow start saw the Colonials fall behind the Seawolves,
15-2, seven minutes into the game. A three-pointer by freshman guard Randi Jackson (Oakland, Calif. / Bishop O'Dowd) jump started the stagnant offense.
Over the next 10 minutes, Robert Morris, whittled the 13-point deficit down
until a three-pointer, the second of the game for freshman Ashley Ravelli
(Milan, Italy / The Hun School), made it a one-point contest, 25-24. That ended
a 22-10 run by RMU and sent the game into break with the Seawolves leading,
28-26, after a buzzer beating jumper by senior Jasmine Tate (Columbus, Ohio /
Harvest Prep).
Five consecutive points by Spanou gave RMU its last tie of
the game, 35-35, with 13:37 to play. Robert Morris came up empty on its next
four offensive possessions while Stony Brook tallied six unanswered points,
including a three-pointer by Dani Klupenger, to take the lead for good.
The Colonials twice cut the margin to one point, but couldn't
clear the final hurdle, eventually succumbing to the visiting Seawolves by a
56-48 margin.
Sabre Proctor led Stony Brook with 16 points off the bench,
going 6-of-11 from the field. Brittany Snow added 12 points while Chikilra
Goodman tacked on nine points. The visiting Seawolves outrebounded the
Colonials by a 42-33 margin.
Robert Morris shot 32.1 percent for the game while knocking
down six three pointers at a 30.0 percent clip. The Colonials held the
Seawolves to 36.7 percent shooting, but the visiting squad benefitted from
going 17-of-25 from the charity stripe. RMU was 6-of-9 on free throws.
The Colonials welcome cross-town rival Duquesne to the
Charles L. Sewall Center this Sunday, Nov. 28, for a 1:00 p.m. game.
