Colonials Run Into Red-Hot Central Michigan Squad

Mt. Pleasant, Mich. / McGuirk Arena - Junior forward Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Nea Smyrni) scored 22 points and had 17 rebounds as the Robert Morris University women's basketball suffered a 96-56 loss at Central Michigan Monday night. Spanou set a career-high for rebounds going 9-of-20 from the floor as the Colonials slip to 0-9 on the year.

The Chippewas had 10 different players score and shot 51.5 percent for the game. Niki DiGuilio led the team with 22 points as she went 7-of-9 from three-point range. Kerby Tamm added 15 points, Taylor Johnson had 14 and Jessica Green tacked on 12 points.

Freshman guard Ashley Ravelli (Milan, Italy / The Hun School) eclipsed her career-high for the second consecutive game scoring 18 points. She hit six three-pointers in 11 attempts and also had three steals and two assists.

The Chippewas were able to get out and run the floor against the Colonials as they forced RMU into 15 first half turnovers. CMU turned those into 16 points and also scored 20 fast break points.

Central Michigan score the first 10 points of the game led by four points from Jessica Green. Spanou would tally six consecutive points in just over 60 seconds of action to spur a 13-5 run that cut the lead to two points when Anna Kavasila (Cholargos, Greece / Glyfada) hit a left-handed hook with 13:31 showing in the first half.

The Chippewas would once again go on an extended run, scoring the next 16 points to surge ahead of RMU,31-13, midway through the opening frame. Central Michigan would hold on to that lead through the break taking a 47-27 margin into the locker room.

Robert Morris opened the second half on an 11-7 run as Ravelli hit two three-pointers and Spanou tallied five points during the stretch. From there, Central Michigan was able to push the tempo and pull away from the Colonials for good.

Robert Morris returns to the floor this Friday, December 21, when they travel to Baltimore, Md., to take on the Coppin State Eagles in a 4:00 p.m. game.
