RMU Thumps Niagara, 6-1, as Vint Breaks Goals Mark

Box Score Pittsburgh, Pa. - Freshman Rebecca Vint (Caledon, Ontario / Brampton Junior Thunder) netted her record fifth game-winning goal of 2011-12 to break the school record for overall goals in a season as she led the Robert Morris University women's hockey team to a 6-1 thrashing of Niagara in the front end of a home-and-home series Friday evening at the RMU Island Sports Center.

The Colonials extended their program-record win total to 17 and clinched one of the top two seeds for the CHA Tournament, guaranteeing their highest-ever finish in the conference standings. RMU, which remained just a single point behind defending conference champion Mercyhurst, has now won four straight conference games for the first time ever and also reset program highs for both wins and points in a season in league action with Friday's effort.

Vint entered the evening tied for RMU's single-season goals record with 18, but she would soon stand alone as she batted home a puck out of the air just 54 seconds into the second stanza. She added a third-period tally, registering her sixth multi-goal game, to become the first Colonial to post a 20-goal season and simultaneously moved into the top 10 in career scores.

Vint also added an assist to notch her 11th multi-point outing of the season, and her fourth with at least three points, and moved into a tie for second in single-season assists at RMU (18). This record-breaking performance for the rookie came exactly one week after she broke the program's single-season points record, a mark she pushed to 38 Friday.

Junior defenseman Jamie Joslin (Richmond Hill, Ontario / Aurora Panthers) joined Vint in topping program goals records Friday. Her second-period tally was the 11th of her career, which made her the highest-scoring defensemen in Colonial history. Joslin added an assist to record her third multi-point game of the season and first ever in conference play. Joslin, who has four points in her last four games, finished the night with 15 points in 2011-12, leaving her one shy of tying the program record for points by a defensemen in a season.

While Vint and Joslin were busy breaking individual goals records, RMU also topped previous highs on the team side as well. With their six scores Friday, the Colonials broke their record for goals in a season, ending the evening with 88. Robert Morris also posted new all-time highs for goals (6), assists (9) and points (15) in a conference game. It marked the third time this season, and first ever in CHA play, that RMU had at least four goals in three straight games--a feat the Colonials had only accomplished once in their entire history prior to 2011-12.

Sophomore Thea Imbrogno (Etobicoke, Ontario / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) matched Vint's output of two goals and an assist to become the fourth distinct Colonial to notch a 30-point season. Imbrogno moved into the top five in career points Friday (59) and also became the sixth Colonial to reach the 25-goal plateau. Imbrogno, who topped her freshmen-year total in goals (13) Friday, registered her eighth multi-point game of the season, surpassing last year's total, and also picked up her first multi-goal game of the season.

Junior Kelsey Thomas (Hamilton, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) was the third and final Colonial to tally three points Friday and became the eighth Colonial to reach the 50-point mark. Thomas, who also moved into eighth in career goals (22), broke her career high for assists (12) with a one-goal, two-assist effort. She collected her fourth multi-point game of the season, including her first in league play, and the ninth such effort of her career while also moving into the top 10 in both single-season goals and points.

While its offensive output was perhaps the most obvious indication of a successful night, Robert Morris showcased noteworthy performances on the other end of the rink as well. RMU blocked 25 shots for the game, the sixth time this season it has reached such a mark, as 10 different Colonials registered multiple blocked shots.

RMU also held Niagara scoreless on four power-play chances, a feat made more impressive since it spent 2:36 killing off Purple Eagle 5-on-3 advantages. The Colonials have killed off all 12 Niagara power-plays they have faced this season, a feat which has helped them lead the CHA in penalty-killing within league play (88.5%).

Robert Morris came out of the gates hot as it took eight of the game's first nine shots before Thomas buried the ninth Colonial effort at 12:33 of the opening frame.

Joslin had dumped the puck from the offensive blue line down to the end boards, and then the Delaney sisters went to work. Junior Cobina Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / Ottawa Senators) quickly picked it up and sent it behind the cage to her older sister, senior assistant captain Brianna Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / NCCP Raiders), who zipped it right out in front to Thomas, who drilled it home.

Niagara would temporarily halt the Colonial momentum as it notched its lone tally at the 18:46 mark to keep the contest even after one penalty-free period of action.

Robert Morris refused to be tied for long, though, as it surged ahead for good in the opening minute of the second. Not long after Vint won a neutral-zone draw, junior Jennifer Kindret (Winnipeg, Manitoba / BC Breakers) claimed the puck behind the net and sent a pass toward Vint who was stationed out in front. The pass was deflected by a Niagara defender and popped high into the air, but Vint corralled it with her body before swatting at it with baseball-style precision to put the Colonials ahead and break the goals record.

Niagara received a chance to even it when it was granted 2:43 of consecutive power-play time, including 1:17 of a 5-on-3, but the Colonials killed off the chance while allowing just three combined shots to keep the momentum in their corner.

The Colonials may have broken the Purple Eagles' morale when they snagged two goals within the span of 34 seconds to go up 4-1, a lead they would maintain after 40 minutes of action.

Imbrogno sniped the first from inside the faceoff circle with a wrist shot after gathering a pass from Thomas, who had received it from Joslin.

Imbrogno then returned the favor as she helped setup Joslin, who scored on a blast from just inside the blue line. Sophomore defenseman Brandi Pollock (Virden, Manitoba / Westman Wildcats) earned the primary assist on the play after she took in Imbrogno's pass and fed it to the junior.

Robert Morris began the third period by completing an incredible penalty-kill effort. The Colonials were forced to kill off 5:41 of consecutive power-play time, including 1:19 of a 5-on-3, and successfully did so without even allowing a single Niagara shot on goal.

After killing off the extra-long power play, Robert Morris dominated play as it outshot Niagara 18-4 the rest of the way.

Imbrogno scored the fifth goal when she banged home a rebound after the initial shot by Thomas was saved. Imbrogno had originally fed Thomas after receiving a pass from Vint in the neutral zone.

Vint completed the scoring when she intercepted a Purple Eagle pass and skated in by herself against the Niagara defense before backhanding in an attempt for her 20th score of the season.

Brianna Delaney's assist moved her current season points total into the top 10, which makes her the only Colonial to have all four of her seasons among the top 10 in single-season points. She pushed her program-record point and assist totals to 117 and 66, respectively.

Pollock's helper allowed her to collect a point in her fourth straight game, becoming the first defensemen to accomplish that feat this season for RMU. She also topped her totals from her rookie season in both points and assists.

Cobina Delaney's assist moved her into sole possession of ninth place in career assists (31) and into a tie for ninth in career points (47).

Kindret's assist was her first point in league play this season.

Robert Morris outshot Niagara, 38-16, for the contest, marking the fourth time this season it has topped an opponent by at least 20 shots.

Junior Kristen DiCiocco (Niagara Falls, Ontario / Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres) played all 60 minutes in net, recording 15 saves, to become just the second Colonial netminder, joining her assistant coach Brianne McLaughlin, to reach 20 career victories.

The Colonials will look to remain in the hunt for the regular-season championship when they finish the series with the Purple Eagles. RMU will also seek to win the season series against Niagara when they meet Sunday, Feb. 12. The first puck drop is set for 5:00 p.m. in New York.
