RMU Sweeps Syracuse as 11 Colonials Tally Points

Box Score

Syracuse, N.Y. - Freshman Rebecca Vint (Caledon, Ontario / Brampton Junior Thunder) continued her record-setting rookie campaign by tying the Colonials' single-season record for goals as the Robert Morris University women's hockey team earned its first-ever road sweep in College Hockey America (CHA) play by downing Syracuse, 5-2, Saturday afternoon at Tennity Ice Pavilion.

The Colonials extended their program record win total to 16 and, in the process, guaranteed their first winning season in school history. Robert Morris' 10th road win also tied the program record for conference wins in a season. Coupled with Friday's four-goal output, RMU broke its all-time record for goals scored in a league series as it claimed its first CHA sweep since October 2008.

Vint tied the game at one at the 19:12 mark of the first period to tally her 18th goal of the season and move into a tie for first. She settled alongside current senior assistant captain Brianna Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / NCCP Raiders) and former Colonial Sara O'Malley just one day after breaking RMU's record for single-season game-winning goals. Vint, who broke RMU's single-season points record Friday, also assisted on the game-winning score Saturday to register her 10th multi-point effort, pushing her season point total to 35, and moved into a tie for third in single-season assists at RMU.

While Vint was one of the leaders Saturday, she had a bevy of support as 11 skaters in all recorded at least one point for the visitors. It marked the first time that 11 or more Colonials had at least one point against a current CHA opponent and the first time a Robert Morris squad achieved this feat on the road since 2008.

Freshman Maddie Collias (Roseville, Mich. / Belle Tire) continued her recent scoring spree as she notched a third-period tally to record a goal in her third-straight game and a point in her fourth-consecutive affair. All five of Collias' points have come within the past seven games.

Sophomore defenseman Brandi Pollock (Virden, Manitoba / Westman Wildcats) closed the scoring by netting her first-career regular-season goal. Pollock matched her point total from last season with the tally and has now registered points in three straight games for the first time in her career.

Sophomore Thea Imbrogno (Etobicoke, Ontario / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) scored her third game-winning goal of the season Saturday to move into a tie for sixth in career goals at RMU. Imbrogno's tally also moved her among the top 10 in single-season scores for the second straight year.

Junior Dayna Newsom (Oakville, Ontario / Oakville Ice) rounded out the quintet of Colonial goal-scorers as her first-period strike doubled as her first CHA point of the season.

Syracuse took a 1-0 lead in the first, but Robert Morris responded with a trio of goals in a 1:39 span, over the first and second periods, to take control. Amazingly, it marked the sixth-consecutive game between Syracuse and Robert Morris in which the Colonials trailed at same point during the contest but produced a comeback to earn at least one point.

Robert Morris dominated the play over the game's first 15 minutes as it took 18 of the game's first 24 shot attempts during this penalty-free stretch. However, it was the Orange that struck first at the 16:50 mark with their lone even-strength goal of the day.

Even though it was scored upon, the RMU offense kept going full tilt, and its pressure soon paid off. Robert Morris took each of the next 11 shot attempts after falling behind, and it scored three goals on those tries. Vint tied the school record and the game with 48 ticks left in the first. Newsom then put the Colonials ahead just 28 seconds later to give RMU a lead heading into the first intermission.

Despite leaving the ice for the break, Robert Morris did not lose its scoring touch as Imbrogno found the twine just 51 seconds into the second stanza to give the Colonials a two-goal lead.

The Colonials kept pouring it on as they took 13 of the game's next 14 shot attempts after going ahead 3-1. Syracuse was finally able to generate some chances when it received a power play just past the midpoint of the game.

In fact, the Orange were granted four minutes of power-play time over a 5:33 stretch, but the Colonial penalty-kill units were up to the challenge. Junior Kristen DiCiocco (Niagara Falls, Ontario / Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres) made six saves during these man-advantages to ensure that the momentum would remain in the visitor's end after 40 minutes of action.

RMU killed off a two-minute Syracuse power play early in the third without allowing a single shot, but the Colonials were soon placed in an undesirable situation. The Orange netted a 5-on-3 goal at the 6:37 mark to tighten the proceedings and pull within a single tally.

With the Orange still skating with an advantage, Robert Morris was called for another penalty to give the hosts their second 5-on-3 advantage of the period that was longer than one minute. The Colonials came through when it mattered most, though, as they were able to kill off all the remaining power play time while maintaining their one-goal edge.

With Robert Morris up 3-2, Collias and Pollock combined to end any hopes of a Syracuse comeback by scoring at the 16:42 and 18:43 marks, respectively, to set the final margin.

Delaney assisted on Vint's goal that helped tie her own record. She tallied her ninth-career point against Syracuse, the most all-time at RMU, and extended her career points and assist records to 116 and 65, respectively.

Delaney's younger sister, junior Cobina Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / Ottawa Senators), provided the primary assist on the final goal to become the 10th player at RMU to reach 30 career assists. The helper also snagged her the first 20-point season of her career. Sophomore defensemen Anneline Lauziere (St. Thomas, Ontario / London Jr. Devilettes) also assisted on Pollock's goal to record her 10th-career point and first in league play this season.

Freshman Katie Fergus (Oakville, Ontario / Burlington Jr. Barracudas) added the assist on Newsom's goal to register her first four-game point streak of the season. Junior Kelsey Thomas (Hamilton, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) supplied a helper on the game-winning score to move into a tie for eighth in career points (47) and tie her career high for assists (10).

Senior captain Paige Pietrangelo (Niagara Falls, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) assisted on Collias' goal to collect her first-career point against Syracuse and reset her career bests in both points and assists.

DiCiocco made 25 saves for Robert Morris while only allowing one even-strength tally.

The Colonials moved into a tie for first with Mercyhurst as the Lakers' game Saturday has yet to finish. RMU will look to remain successful in CHA play when it returns to the ice next weekend in a home-and-home series with Niagara. The opening puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, in Pittsburgh.
