Capp, Sleith Garner League Recognition

Moon Township, Pa. - Senior first baseman Sarah Capp (McKees Rocks, Pa. / Montour) and freshman pitcher Nicole Sleith (Smithton, Pa. / Yough) of the Robert Morris University softball team both earned weekly honors from the Northeast Conference (NEC) as announced in a league release Monday.

Capp was selected as the NEC's Player of the Week while Sleith was tabbed as the conference's Co-Rookie of the Week after RMU completed a perfect 5-0 weekend at UMBC's Spring Classic. The Colonials were the only one of the 10 teams that competed in the event to make it through the tournament unbeaten.

Capp claimed the second player of the week honor of her career and collected her third overall NEC weekly award. She becomes the second active Colonial to be recognized multiple times in the league's player of the week category.

Sleith garnered a league honor for the second time in four weeks to become the sixth active Colonial to have won multiple NEC weekly awards. RMU has also now claimed 12 of the past 35 weekly rookie honors dating to March 2009, a noteworthy figure in an 11-team league.

Capp went 8-for-15 (.533) with two homers and nine RBI on the weekend to lead Robert Morris to its perfect 5-0 mark. After going 1-2 with a sacrifice in its opener Friday, Capp really cranked up her offensive output over the next two days. Capp notched two multi-hit games Saturday, just the second time in her career in which she had two such efforts in the same day, and supplied a two-run homer that served as the margin of victory in a win against Siena.

Capp picked up right where she left off Sunday as she went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI in a win against Rhode Island. She collected her 20th career multi-hit game against the Rams and then extended her hitting streak to a career-high eight games against Coppin State. She also collected a RBI in her fourth-consecutive contest, the second time in her career in which she has achieved that feat. Capp scored three runs on the weekend and posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage despite having a team-high 45 chances. She was also even more impressive in tight spots as she went 5-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

Capp leads the team in both hits (21) and RBI (13) and has posted a .323 average with a .362 on-base percentage for the Colonials thus far.

Sleith was a major factor in helping RMU to five wins as she earned complete-game victories in each of her three starts and also recorded her third save of the season. She began the tournament by spinning a three-hit shutout against BIG EAST member Georgetown in a tight 1-0 affair. Sleith notched her second shutout of the season and allowed only three singles on the day. She tied her season high with eight strikeouts and did not walk or hit a single batter.

Sleith earned the complete-game victory in the opener Saturday as she scattered just five singles and allowed one run against Siena. She then came on in the seventh against Brown with the tying run at the plate and recorded the final two outs, without conceding a hit or a run, to finish off the victory. Sleith completed her weekend by earning her seventh win of the season by notching her ninth CG of 2012 against Rhode Island. For the week, Sleith went 3-0 with a 1.29 ERA. She allowed just 15 hits, and only one extra-base hit, in 21.2 IP as opponents hit just .192 off of her, and she recorded 18 strikeouts in all.

For the season, Sleith has compiled a 1.69 ERA in 83 innings. She has notched 71 strikeouts while allowing opponents to hit just .219.

After winning each of its last five games, Robert Morris will look to keep its momentum going this weekend as it opens conference play with a pair of twinbills. The Colonials will meet LIU-Brooklyn Saturday, March 24, at 1:00 p.m. and will face Wagner Sunday, March 25, at Noon.
