Robert Morris Sweeps Defending Champions

Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University softball team fell behind in the first inning in both ends of its Northeast Conference (NEC) doubleheader against defending tournament champion Sacred Heart, but the Colonials did not waver and rallied for a pair of victories to sweep the Pioneers Friday at Pioneer Park.

RMU won the opener, 3-2 in nine innings, before claiming a shortened nightcap, 6-3.

Freshman Nicole Sleith (Smithton, Pa. / Yough) went the distance to notch the win in the opener before registering the final five outs of Game Two to pick up the save. With those two efforts, Sleith broke RMU's single-season record for appearances with 39 as she tied and then surpassed the mark that her current pitching coach, Lauren Dickinson, set in her junior season of 2001. Sleith worked 10.2 innings combined and allowed just seven hits and two runs while striking out 11 against no walks.

Sleith's two outings also moved her into sixth place in single-season strikeouts (194) and into a tie for seventh in single-season wins (19). She has now posted 94 strikeouts against just 11 walks in her past 12 starts.

Senior Jaci Timko (Houston, Pa. / Chartiers Houston) led the Colonials' offensive effort as she was a combined 4-for-7 with two runs scored and a RBI. She went a perfect 3-for-3 in the nightcap to post her team-leading 12th multi-hit game of the season and the 57th of her career. Timko, who notched her 18th three-hit performance, reached 30 runs in a season for the third time in her career and moved into sole possession of sixth place in career RBI with 86.

In addition to Timko, six other Colonials posted multiple hits on the day, including freshman Samantha Santillo (Ellwood City, Pa. / Lincoln) and sophomore Cassie Show (Connellsville, Pa. / Connellsville), each of whom tallied a pair of RBI.

After Robert Morris went down in order in the first in the opener, Sacred Heart struck early by scoring twice with two outs on three hits and a sacrifice.

Both teams went down in order in the second, but RMU soon evened the contest in the third.

Freshman Tess Apke (Mt. Lebanon, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) doubled on the seventh pitch of her at bat to start the frame. She was at third base with two outs when Show singled her home. Redshirt senior Jessica Calderone (Wilmington, Del. / St. Mark's) then followed with a two-strike triple to right center to tie the game.

RMU had runners on in the fourth, courtesy of a single by sophomore Chelsea Siar (Glenshaw, Pa. / Shaler Area), and the fifth, due to a Pioneer error, but would not move either runner past first base. The Colonials put two on in the sixth thanks to a one-out opposite-field single by Sarah Capp (McKees Rocks, Pa. / Montour) and a nine-pitch walk by Siar, but Sacred Heart escaped the threat.

Sleith worked around two-out singles in both the third and fifth innings while retiring the side in order in the fourth and sixth.

Junior Britta Grafton (Jamestown, Pa. / Jamestown) knocked a pinch-hit single with two outs in the seventh but would not advance. Sleith sent Sacred Heart down 1-2-3 in the bottom half on a pair of popouts and a groundout to send the teams to extras.

Timko singled to center with two outs in the eighth, but she would be stranded.

Sacred Heart had a one-out single in the bottom half and moved its runner to second with a groundout, but Sleith got a looking strikeout to continue the lengthy affair.

Senior Katrina Gallagher (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon McMillan) led off the ninth with a two-strike single and moved to second when classmate Allie Patton (Poland, Ohio / Poland) worked a full-count walk. Gallagher would come running home from second when the Pioneers committed an error on the infield during the ensuing at bat, and she beat the throw to the plate relatively easily.

The Pioneers punched a leadoff double in the bottom half, but Sleith got a popup and a groundout to put two outs in the books. The tying run would move to third on a wild pitch, but the rookie left it there as she claimed a swinging strikeout to close out the opener.

It marked the third-consecutive season in which the Colonials won Game One of a doubleheader with Sacred Heart in extra innings. In each of those outings, RMU's starter has gone the distance to notch the victory.

Calderone blasted her first three-bagger of the season and the seventh of her career. Apke posted her sixth double of the season and her 11th extra-base hit in 88 at bats this season. Siar became just the second Colonial in school history to tally at least 22 walks in a season with her base on balls in the opener.

Sacred Heart opened the scoring again in the nightcap as it tallied an unearned run in the first with the aid of two infield singles.

Robert Morris came right back in the second, though, scoring a trio of runs, all with two outs, to surge ahead. Timko opened the frame with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice by Siar. With two down, Gallagher singled to keep the inning going, and then RMU executed a successful double steal to draw even. Santillo followed with a single to put runners at the corners and then promptly stole second. RMU took the lead on a wild pitch, and after a walk by sophomore Chelsea Evans (Beaver Falls, Pa. / Riverside), Show singled in Santillo.

Sophomore Geena Badolato (Mt. Lebanon, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon), RMU's Game Two starter, worked around a leadoff single in the second by getting a swinging strikeout and an inning-ending double play.

RMU kept the pressure on in the third as it scored three more times to widen its edge. Capp doubled to right center to open the frame, and Timko then singled into center to score pinch-runner Jessica Tanigawa (Marysville, Wash. / Marysville-Pitchuck). Siar followed with a single to put two aboard, and after two outs, Santillo knocked an opposite-field hit that put the visitors up by five runs.

A single, walk and a triple got Sacred Heart two runs in the third, but Badolato limited the damage by getting a flyout and a groundout to strand a Pioneer at third base.

RMU went down in order in the fourth, and Badolato again left a runner in scoring position in the bottom half, closing the inning with a strikeout.

Timko and Apke both singled to center in the fifth, but Robert Morris couldn't cash in the runs. With two runners on in the fifth, Sleith came on in relief and notched a strikeout and a groundout to keep the lead intact.

Evans singled to open the sixth and moved to second on a sacrifice by Show but she would be left there. After Sleith retired the side on a popup and two strikeouts in the bottom of the sixth, the game was called on account of darkness.

After tossing a career-high nine innings in the opener, Sleith recorded her fifth save of the season in Game Two.

Santillo posted her 10th multi-hit game in the nightcap and her ninth multi-RBI effort.

Calderone moved into a tie for second in career games played at RMU (188) and sits just two off the all-time record while Patton moved into the career top 10 in that category by appearing in her 176th contest.

Calderone's triple in the opener also helped RMU extend a sizeable offensive streak. The Colonials have now drilled at least one extra-base hit in 28 consecutive games, their longest such stretch in over eight years.

Robert Morris will now play another key NEC doubleheader Saturday, April 21. The Colonials will play at Quinnipiac with the first pitch scheduled for an earlier start time of Noon.
