Klatovy, Czech Republic - The FIBA European
Championships have become a showcase for Robert Morris University junior
forward Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Greek National U20). For the second
time in three tournaments, Spanou was named the most valuable player, this time
after leading her Greek National Team to the title of the 2012 U20 European
Championship "B" Division and a promotion to "A" Division for 2013.
Last summer, Spanou was named the MVP of the U20 European
Championship as well and was named to the all-tournament team during the U18
competition.
Over the last two weeks, the 6'1" forward was dismantling
her opponents in the B Division while leading the Greeks to a 7-1 record. She
finished second in the event in scoring at 20.4 points per game and led all
players in rebounding (12.6 per game) and double-double, collecting six in
eight games. Spanou led her Greek squad in every major statistical category including
assists (2.5), blocks (0.6) and steals (1.9).
A member of the Greek national program since the age of
14, Spanou capped her most recent tournament by dropping a career 33 points in
the championship game victory against host nation Czech Republic. She played
all 40 minutes in each of the team's final three contests, ripping down a
career-best 17 rebounds in the team's final pool-play game against Israel.
This marks the second time in Spanou's career that she
has led Greece to an international title. In 2008, she helped win the B
Division of the Under 16 event. She also earned a team silver medal in last
summer's U18 championship.
As a sophomore at Robert Morris, Spanou was named to the
2011-12 Northeast Conference All-Conference First Team after finishing fourth
in the nation with 20 double-doubles. She was named the league's Rookie of the Year,
an All-Rookie Team pick and a second-team All-NEC selection as a freshman.
