Moon Township, Pa. / Joe Walton Stadium - The
Robert Morris University women's soccer team outplayed Howard for most of the
night, but couldn't solve Bison goalkeeper Kyra Dickinson in a 0-0 tie at Joe
Walton Stadium Friday night. The game was the first home night contest for an
RMU soccer program. The Colonials move to 0-4-1 on the year while the Bison are
now 0-4-2.
Dickinson shined under the lights for Howard, making 14
saves. RMU freshman goalkeeper Chelsea de Jager (Grimsby, Ontario / Governor
Simcoe) earned her first career shutout by turning away three shots for RMU.
In the first half, freshman Madison Kozlowski (Cranberry
Township, Pa. / Seneca Valley) had the first chance of the game for either
team, gaining possession in the penalty box before hitting her shot from 15
yards right at Bison keeper Kyra Dickinson. RMU sophomore Cassie Raymond (South
Park, Pa. / South Park) had a golden opportunity to put the Colonials on top in
the 34th minute as she got behind everybody on the Howard defense, including
the keeper, before missing the wide open net from 10 yards out.
Following halftime, junior Katie Austin (Dallastown, Pa. /
Dallastown) came up with a deflected ball 20 yards from net and took a touch
towards goal. Dickinson was up to task again, however, reacting quickly to her
left to stop the shot from eight yards out. Dickinson took away what looked
like another sure RMU goal in the 73rd minute when freshman Kristie Hamilton
(Allison Park, Pa. / Shaler) one-timed a shot from eight yards out only to
watch the Howard keeper get her left hand on the ball, knocking it out of
danger.
The first real goal-scoring opportunity of the game for
Howard came with 13 minutes left in regulation. A diagonal through-ball from
Retha Kefoed found Cynthia Snyder's right foot. Her quick shot from eight yards
out was parried aside by a quick reaction from de Jager.
The Colonials put five more shots on net in overtime while
the visiting Bison managed just one shot on goal. RMU held a 9-4 advantage in
corner kicks.
Robert Morris hosts crosstown-rival Duquesne this Sunday,
Sept. 2, at 1:00 p.m. at North Athletic Complex. It is the final non-conference
home game for the Colonials this season.
