Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University men's tennis team opened its 2012-13 campaign Sunday afternoon with a 7-0 victory over Mercyhurst at the North Athletic Complex.
The Colonials swept the action in singles and also produced the doubles point thanks to victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 flights to earn the sweep.
At the first singles, senior Jose Limon (Colonia San Jose, Mexico) posted a 7-6 (11-7), 6-1 victory over Travis Beck, while junior Angus Thomson (Kedron, Australia) earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over Robert Rizea at No. 2.
Eric Drusko of the Lakers took senior Tarun Kishan (Mississauga, Ontario / Saint Francis Xavier Secondary) to three sets at the third singles flight, but Kishan earned a 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 victory.
At the No. 4 singles flight, reigning All-NEC Second Team selection Andre Coiro (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil) posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over Mike Vinopal, while freshmen Juan Andres Hirmas (Padre Las Casas, Chile) and Fernando Leite (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil) were each victorious in their collegiate debuts.
Hirmas defeated Kyle Hosier at the fifth singles, 6-1 and 6-0, while Leite took down Mario Sandoval at No. 6, 6-1 and 6-1.
In doubles action, Limon teamed up with Hirmas for an 8-2 win over Drusko and Vinopal at the second doubles, while Coiro and Leite earned an 8-0 victory over Hosier and Sandoval at the No. 3 flight.
Robert Morris returns to action Friday, Sept. 21, by taking part in the Wright State Invitational in Dayton, Ohio.
