Late Goal Lifts Dukes Over Robert Morris

Moon Township, Pa. / North Athletic Complex - The Robert Morris University women's soccer team played a tight game with crosstown-rival Duquesne before a late goal lifted the Dukes to a 2-1 win at North Athletic Complex Sunday afternoon. Robert Morris slips to 0-5-1 on the year while Duquesne improves to 2-3-0.

RMU freshman goalkeeper Chelsea de Jager (Grimsby, Ontario / Governor Simcoe) finished the game with 10 saves as the Dukes outshot RMU 21-8.

Just 10 minutes after kick-off, a counter attack by the Dukes gave them the numbers advantage coming into the RMU box. An initial shot from close range by Bridget Lynch was saved by de Jager. The rebound, however, bounced to the middle of the box and Duquesne freshman Caroline Lacy was the first to it for her first career goal.

The Colonials started an organized breakout down the left wing that led to the tying goal for RMU in the 43rd minute. A long ball forward to junior Katie Austin (Dallastown, Pa. / Dallastown) was headed to freshman Madison Kozlowski (Cranberry Township, Pa. / Seneca Valley). Kozlowski one-timed the ball forward and inside to senior Ayana Davis (Mt. Laurel, N.J. / Holy Cross) who carried the ball to the middle of the field before hitting a shot toward the left post.  Dukes keeper Devon Tabata got her hands on the shot but couldn't prevent it from finding the back of the net.

Robert Morris nearly took the lead in the 54th minute as a long ball into the box by Austin was redirected on net by freshman Lauren Sulkowski (St. Catherines, Ontario / Holy Cross). Tabata, however, was perfectly positioned to make the stop.

Duquesne found the gamewinner as a cross into the box by Stephanie Colon went right to the foot of Kahli Hale eight yards from goal. Hale extended her right foot and poked the ball into the right corner to give the Dukes a 2-1 lead in the 77th minute that they would not relinquish.

The Colonials play their next four games on the road beginning with an 8:00 p.m. Eastern game at Air Force on Friday, Sept. 7.
