Box Score West Long Branch, N.J. / Multipurpose Athletic Center - Monmouth University scored the final eight points of the game
to upend the Robert Morris University women's basketball team, 58-47, in a
Northeast Conference game at the Multipurpose Athletic Center Saturday
afternoon. The loss snaps a three-game win streak for the Colonials who slip to
3-11 and 2-1 in the league. Monmouth matches RMU's league record and is now 5-9
overall.
Junior forward Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Nea
Smyrni) eclipsed her career-high for rebounds for the second consecutive game
with 21. She added 14 points for her 11th double-double of the
season and dished five assists as well.
Freshman Randi Jackson (Oakland, Calif. / Bishop O'Dowd) had
a career-high 13 points, going 5-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-5 on
three-pointers.
"We didn't come out with the energy that we need to in order to win," said RMU head coach Sal Buscaglia. "Although we had a chance to win in the end, our shooting performcenace, especially in the second half, and free throws throughout the game did not allow us to overcome our lack of energy, especially in the early parts of the game. We have to regroup and understand that we need to have the same focus and energy day in and day out. You just can't afford to take a day or even a possession off."
An 11-0 run by the Hawks midway through the first half
turned a two-point RMU lead into a nine-point deficit, 22-13, with 10:18 in the
opening half. Jackson answered with a runner and three-pointer from the top of
the key. Her back-to-back baskets
started a 10-3 run that saw RMU cut the margin to 25-23.
The Hawks, however, were able to regain momentum and end
the opening frame on an 8-2 run. Carly Thibault and Gabby Singer each buried
treys in the final 2:41 to give Monmouth a 34-25 lead at the break.
Monmouth stretched the margin to 11 points, 50-39, with
8:05 left in the first half. The Colonials, trying to muster one more answer,
responded with an 8-0 surge. Two layups by Spanou sandwiched short jumpers by
freshman Ashley Ravelli (Milan, Italy / The Hun School) and junior Anna Kavasila (Cholargos, Greece / Glyfaada). That made it a 50-47 with 2:34 left to
the play in the game, but the final minutes belonged to the Hawks who scored the
game's final eight points.
The Colonials continue their swing through the Garden
State when they tip-off against the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights at 2:00 p.m.
Monday, January 14.
