Collias Leads Colonials in Win over Lions

Box Score

Pittsburgh, Pa. - In game two against Lindenwood University, the Robert Morris University women's hockey team spilt the series with a 5-2 victory over the Lions Saturday afternoon in College Hockey America (CHA) action.

Sophomore forward Maddie Collias (Roseville, Mich. / Belle Tire) led the Colonials scoring two goals in the contest, including the game-winning goal. The two-goal performance is the first of the sophomore's career while the game-winning goal also marks a first for Collias.

At the nine minute mark of the first period, sophomore forward Rebecca Vint (Caledon, Ontario / Brampton Jr. Thunder) scored the opening goal of the contest to put the Colonials up, 1-0. The score was a short-handed goal two minutes into Lindenwood's first power play of the game. After a clear  of the puck from the RMU defensive zone by senior assistant captain Jamie Joslin (Richmond Hill, Ontario / Aurora Panthers), junior forward Thea Imbrogno (Etobicoke, Ontario / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) picked up the clear and passed off to Vint. From center ice, Vint skated the puck into the offensive zone and found the net over the left shoulder of Lindenwood goaltender Nicole Hensley. The short-handed score is the first of the season for Vint and the second of her young career. With the goal, Vint has moved into a tie for fourth place in RMU program history with 34 goals.

For the remainder of the first period and the whole second period, the score continued to favor RMU, 1-0. In the second period, the Colonials outshot the Lions 21-6 while RMU had three power play opportunities versus Lindenwood's one.

Less than three minutes into the third period, Lion forward Jocelyn Slattery scored her second goal of the season to tie the contest, 1-1. Katie Erickson and Alyssa West each notched assists on the goal.

Junior forward Kristen Richards (Toronto, Ontario / Niagara University) put the Colonials back on top 44 seconds later when she picked up the puck at the blue line, drove around a Lindenwood defender to puck the away short-side for the second RMU goal.

Only 11 seconds later, Lindenwood returned the favor and tied the contest 2-2 on an even-strength goal from Kendra Broad. Slattery and Lyndsay Kirkham registered the primary and secondary assists on the score. The goals marked the third of the series for Broad.

The first three goals scored in the third period were all scored within 55 seconds.

With 11:12 on the clock, Collias scored her first goal of the game after burying a rebounded shot from Richards. Senior forward Kelsey Thomas (Hamilton, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) hit Richards with a pass in the right offensive faceoff zone. Richards skated the puck to the net for a back-handed shot that allowed the Collias rebounded goal. The assist for Thomas has moved her into fifth all-time at Robert Morris for points with 72 and fourth all-time in assists with 41.

A little less than two minutes later, sophomore forward Katelyn Scott (Brighton, Mich. / Belle Tire) added cushion to the Colonial lead with an unassisted score. Scott caused a turnover at the bottom of the right defensive faceoff circle, took the puck to the net and banged a shot off the cross bar to score her second goal of the season.

With 3:36 left to play in the final frame, Collias scored her second goal of the game to put Robert Morris up, 5-2. Similar to the previous goal scored by Scott, Collias caused a turnover in the right faceoff zone and maintained control of the puck. The forward skated the puck hard to the net and put home a back-handed shot over the Lion netminder's glove.

Senior goaltender Delayne Brian (Winnipeg, Manitoba / Wayne State University) earned the start in net for the Colonials. Brian registered a 19-save performance to pick up her second victory this year. The senior has now earned two CHA wins this season. Brian owns 1.51 goals against average in league play with a .927 save percentage.

The five-goal performance for RMU is the third time this season the Colonials have put up at least five goals in a single game. Four of RMU's goals this afternoon were scored by members of the sophomore class. It marks the first time this season four separate skaters from the same class have all tallied goals.

The RMU penalty kill unit went a perfect three-for-three against Lindenwood on the afternoon. The unit's season kill percentage sits at .867 while its kill percentage in league games is .841. In this afternoon's contest the Colonials outshot the Lions 48-21 and won 46 of 72 faceoffs.

Robert Morris is now 10-6-2 overall this season, going 6-4-0 in conference play. The Colonials return to action next weekend in non-conference play against Quinnipiac. Puck drop is slated for 7:05 p.m. on Fri., January 18 and 2:05 p.m. on Sat., January 19.
