Mataly Gives Colonials Victory In Final Seconds

Box Score

Moon Township, Pa. / Charles L. Sewall Center - Freshman guard Lou Mataly (Toulouse, France / Lycee-Bellevue) scored the winning points with 1.9 seconds left to give the Robert Morris University women's basketball team a come-from-behind victory, 61-59, over Mount St. Mary's at the Charles L. Sewall Center Saturday afternoon. The game-winning basket by Mataly was an exclamation point in a game in which she set season-highs for both points (22) and three-pointers (6).

The Colonials fought back from a 10-point deficit to tie the game, 59-59, on a free throw by junior forward Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Nea Smyrni) with 56 seconds to play. Freshman Randi Jackson (Oakland, Calif. / Bishop O'Dowd) stole the ball on Mount's next possession to give RMU the ball with 28 seconds showing on the clock.

With the game clock at six seconds and counting, Mataly took the ball from the top of the key, dribbled to her left and split a pair of defenders to put a finger-roll off the glass and in with 1.9 seconds remaining in regulation.  A desperation heave by the Mount was well wide and the Colonials improved to 4-14 overall and 3-4 in Northeast Conference games.

"I'm really excited for our team to get this victory. These young ladies work so hard and play so hard that they deserve the rewards of this win," said RMU head coach Sal Buscaglia. "Somehow, someway, they found it in them to come back from being behind late and make stops, get rebounds and make plays, including Randi getting the late tie-up and Lou scoring the winning basket."

Mataly was 6-of-8 on three-pointers and finished 7-of-9 overall from the field. Spanou collected her 13th consecutive double-double, scoring 20 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. She also had five assists, two steals and a block. Senior forward Anna Gailite (Riga, Latvia / Riga Secondary #47) added 11 points and six boards.

Mount St. Mary's point guard Selina Mann scored eight points during a 10-0 run to give the visitors a 57-47 lead with 7:31 left in regulation. A steal on the next possession by Mataly turned into a coast-to-coast layup by Jackson that started a 14-2 run by RMU to end the game.

A short jumper by Kelly Hartwell (Woodbridge, Va. / Gar-Field) cut the margin to six before Jacqueline Brewer knocked down two from the charity stripe for the Mountaineers. Spanou then drilled two freebies before Mataly canned a three-pointer making it a three-point contest with just over two minutes to play. Spanou hit a nifty hook shot from the paint and then hit 1-of-2 free throws to set up the last minute heroics.

RMU opened the game on an 11-5 surge as Mataly hit two treys and Spanou had one. Mount battled back and surged ahead, 22-17, as Brewer hit her fourth three-pointer of the contest. The Colonials knotted the contest at 24 and eventually took a 33-31 lead into the break when Mataly splashed two three pointers in the last 1:26 of the half.

Brewer finished 5-of-9 on three-pointers en route to a team-best 19 points. Mann tacked on 15 points and seven rebounds as well as seven assists and four steals.

Robert Morris outrebounded the Mount, 31-28, and shot 44.9 percent (22-49) including a red-hot 7-for-12 (58.3 percent) from three-point range.
