Moon Township, Pa. – The
Robert Morris University men's tennis team opened its 2013-14 campaign this weekend by taking part in the Purple Eagle Invitational, which was hosted by Niagara.
Highlighting the invite for the Colonials was senior
Angus Thomson (Brisbane, Australia / Brisbane Grammar School), who posted a perfect 3-0 record in singles action.
Thomson opened up play in singles action with a come-from-behind victory over Charles Farres of Roberts Wesleyan, dropping a 5-7 decision in the first set before posting a 7-6 (7-4) victory in set two and a 6-2 in the deciding set to claim the win.
All three of Thomson's singles victories on the weekend went three sets, as he also posted a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Travis Beck of Mercyhurst and a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Michael Elortegui of Niagara.
Thomson also teamed up with sophomore
Juan Andres Hirmas (Santiago, Chile / Monte Tabor) to go 2-1 in doubles action. The pair defeated Robert Beer and Emanuel Rauchle of Roberts Wesleyan, 8-6, and Daniel Gimenez and Eric Drusko of Mercyhurst, 8-2.Â
Hirmas joined sophomore
Matheus Neves Ferreira (Sao Paulo, Brazil / Collegio Mackenzie) to go 2-1 in singles play at the Purple Eagle Invite, as Hirmas defeated Matthew McCall of Roberts Wesleyan, 6-1 and 6-3, and Drusko, 7-5 and 6-1, while Neves Ferreira posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Beers and a 6-2, 6-4 win over Conor McCooey of Mercyhurst.
Robert Morris closes out its 2013 fall season with the Youngstown State Fall Invitational, which takes place Friday, Oct. 25, through Sunday, Oct. 27.Â
