Colonials to Host Nationally-Ranked Terriers

The Colonials return home for the first of two consecutive weekend home series

Robert Morris Colonials (3-1-0) vs. No. 8/7 Boston University Terriers (1-0-1)
Friday, Oct. 18 / 84 Lumber Arena - Pittsburgh, Pa. / 7:05 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 19 / 84 Lumber Arena - Pittsburgh, Pa. / 2:05 p.m.

Top Story - The Colonials look to continue their winning streak, as it was extended to three games after a sweep of Bemidji State this past weekend. RMU defeated the Beavers, 2-1, in the opening game of the series behind a strong outing from junior goaltender Courtney Vinet. In the second game, the Colonials shut out Bemidji State, 3-0, with stellar netminding from freshman Jessica Dodds. Vinet stopped 28 of 29 shots on Friday, while Dodds pushed away all 22 attempts on Saturday. Freshman Brittany Howard tallied a goal and two assists in the two contests and leads the team in goals (2), assists (3), and points (5) going into this weekend's series with Boston University.

Series vs. Boston University - RMU trails Boston University in the all-time series, 0-4-0, with their most recent game coming last season. The then No. 3 Terriers defeated the Colonials, 3-0, in Boston, Mass. on Oct. 27, 2012. Boston squeaked out a 4-3 victory on Oct. 9, 2009, and swept RMU 4-1 and 3-2 in October 2006. The Colonials rifled off 24 shots in last year's meeting and won the faceoff battle, 27-21.

Scouting Boston University - Boston University comes into this weekend's series with a record of 1-0-1, earning those decisions this past weekend with a 2-2 tie against RPI and a 3-2 victory over Union. The Terriers are currently ranked No. 8 in the USA Today / USA Hockey Women's College Hockey Poll and No. 7 in the United States College Hockey Online (USCHO) Poll. Sophomore forward Rebecca Russo was named Hockey East's co-Player of the Week after registering three goals and an assist on the weekend. Last season, Boston University (28-6-3) won the Hockey East regular season and tournament championships and advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four, but lost in the National Championship game to Minnesota, 6-3.

Last Time Out - The Colonials picked up their first sweep of the 2013-14 campaign last weekend, as they took both games from Bemidji State.

In Friday's contest, RMU defeated the Beavers, 2-1. After a scoreless first period, junior foward Maddie Collias dented the scoreboard 3:49 into the second 20 minutes. Senior assistant captain Thea Imbrogno gathered the puck in the offensive zone and found her fellow forward, who then beat Bemidji State goaltender Brittni Mowat for her first goal of the season. A little more than six minutes later, freshman forward Maeve Garvey would score the first goal of her career and extend the lead to 2-0.

Junior goaltender Courtney Vinet held the Beavers scoreless for 59:55, but a late goal spoiled the second shutout of her career.  Vinet stopped 28 of 29 shots on the contest, and earned her first win of the season.

RMU would blank Bemidji State in the series finale, 3-0. Freshman Brittany Howard scored her team-high second goal of the season 9:06 into the first period off a pass from Garvey. Junior foward Rebecca Vint would extend the Colonial lead to 2-0 about three minutes later on a penalty shot, and then senior captain Kristen Richards lit the lamp with her first goal of the season in the second period.

Freshman goaltender Jessica Dodds earned her second start between the pipes and rewarded her team with the first shutout of her career. Dodds turned away all 22 shots on goal.

Fantastic Freshmen - Freshmen Jessica Dodds and Brittany Howard were honored by the CHA this week in their weekly awards.

Dodds, a goaltender from London, Ontario, was named co-Goaltender of the Week following a shutout on Saturday against Bemidji State. Making just her second career start, Dodds recorded 22 saves on the contest and blanked the Beavers in a 3-0 victory. The freshman is now 2-0 on the season, and leads the CHA in winning percentage, save percentage (.956), and goals against average (0.97) among qualified goalies.

Howard, a forward from St. Thomas, Ontario, was honored with the CHA Rookie of the Week award after registering three points on the weekend. Howard tallied her second goal of the season in the aforementioned 3-0 win against Bemidji State, and assisted on the deciding goal in Friday's 2-1 victory. The forward also registered an assist in Saturday's contest, giving her a team-high and CHA rookie-high five points in the first four games of the year.

This marks the first time the Colonials have won a weekly award from the CHA this season. The last honor for RMU came on March 4, 2013, when assistant captain Thea Imbrogno and recently graduated goaltender Kristen DiCiocco took home CHA Player and Goaltender of the Week honors, respectively. That instance also marked the last time that RMU won multiple weekly awards.

Howard's Rookie of the Week honor is also the first for a Colonial since Rebecca Vint won the award on Feb. 20, 2012. If Howard can claim Rookie of the Week honors five more times this season, she will tie Vint and Imbrogno (2010-11) for the most in school history.

Looking Back - The Colonials have played twice on Oct. 19 in their history, one of those games coming just last year.

On Oct. 19, 2012, RMU defeated Yale in their season opener, 2-0. Current Colonial seniors Kristen Richards and Kylie St. Louis tallied the two scores, both of which came in the third period of play. Kristen DiCiocco earned the fourth shutout of her career after stopping 20 shots on the evening.

RMU defeated Clarkson, 3-1, on the same date in 2007. The Colonials quickly fell down 1-0 against the Golden Knights, but rebounded with three unanswered goals to earn their first victory of the season. Chelsea Walkland, Alissa Dorman, and Kathryn Traynor all scored for RMU, while Brianna McLaughlin made 25 saves in net.
