Box Score
Moon Township, Pa. – The
Robert Morris University field hockey team broke a single-season school record this afternoon as they won their ninth game of the season, 3-0, against Siena.
In addition to rewriting the record books, the Colonials also clinched their first winning season in program history. The previous record of eight wins was set in the 2011 season.
RMU picked up their first goal in the 12
th minute off a penalty corner opportunity. Junior
Taleah Scott (Crookwell, Australia / Crookwell) passed it to freshman
Chloe McIlwaine (Belfast, Ireland / Northumbria University), and the forward chopped a high shot that bounced over Saints goalkeeper Beth Myers. The goal was McIlwaine's ninth of the year, which tied a school record for most goals in a season. The previous mark was set by now-sophomore
Jess Martin-Brown (Mount Gambier, Australia / University of Adelaide), who scored nine in her freshman campaign last year.
The Colonials would extend the lead to 2-0 in the 24
th minute, as Scott found the back of the net. McIlwaine gathered the ball from Scott on a penalty corner and fired a shot at net. It was saved by Myers, but the rebound ricocheted to the junior forward, who then took advantage of the open net for her fourth goal of the season.
RMU would set the final tally at the 39
th minute. Almost identical to the previous goal, sophomore
Sophie Watt (Sawtell, Australia / John Paul College) rifled a shot that was initially saved by Myers, but the rebound found its way to junior
Jamie Hartley (Tamworth, Australia / University of Newcastle), who would then bury it into the cage.
Junior goalkeeper
Erin McKenzie (Lismore, Australia / University of Queensland Tech) earned her sixth shutout of the season with help from some outstanding defense by sophomore
Marzana Fiedtkou (Georgetown, Guyana / Marian Aacdemy) and freshman
Simone Bindels (Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, NLD / Open Schoolgemeenschap Bijlmer).
The Colonials held advantages in shots (25 to 2), shots on goal (15 to 0), and penalty corners (12 to 2).
RMU will end their regular season next Sunday as they play Monmouth with possible Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) playoff implications on the line. The game, which starts at noon from Joe Walton Stadium, will also recognize the Colonial seniors as a part of Senior Day.
