Colonials Wrap Up Fall Season at YSU Invitational

The Robert Morris University men's tennis team wrapped up its 2013 fall schedule Sunday afternoon with play in the Youngstown State Fall Invitational in Youngstown, Ohio.

In addition to RMU, the invite included ASA of New York, Duquesne, Saint Francis U., Wright State and the host Penguins.

In singles action, sophomore Matheus Neves Ferreira (Sao Paulo, Brazil / Collegio Mackenzie) had the best showing for the Colonials, posting a 2-2 record.

In the opening round, Neves Ferreira earned a three-set victory over Mason Bourbon of Wright State, 0-6, 6-5 and 6-0. Advancing to the second round, Neves Ferreira battled Rodrigo Campos of Youngstown State before falling, 6-3 and 6-5.

In consolation play, Neves Ferreira defeated Dan Hyman of Wright State, 6-2 and 6-4, before dropping a 6-5, 5-4 decision to Max Rubin of Duquesne.

Despite the setback to Rubin, Neves Ferreira concluded his fall campaign with a record of 4-3 in singles play.

Neves Ferreira also teamed up with sophomore Juan Andres Hirmas (Santiago, Chile / Monte Tabor) in doubles action to post a 1-1 mark.

In the opening round the duo dropped an 8-5 decision to Zeeshan Ismail and Kirill Kultinov of Wright State before rebounding to post an 8-2 win over Diego Alcocer and Trey Morris of ASA of New York.

Senior Angus Thomson (Brisbane, Australia / Brisbane Grammar School) and freshman Bruno Russo (Sao Paulo, Brazil / Bio Xii) also went 1-1 in doubles action at the Youngstown State Invitational. The duo opened play with an 8-4 win over Eli Cerdan and Kyle Korus of in-state rival Saint Francis U. before suffering an 8-4 loss to Rafael Alvarez and Jack Boling of ASA of New York.
