Moon Township, Pa. / Charles L. Sewall Center — Senior forward
Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Nea Smyrni) pulled down 17 rebounds and moved into first all-time at
Robert Morris University with 1,127 career caroms in an 85-60 victory against Coppin State at the Charles L. Sewall Center Sunday evening. Spanou added 17 points to record her 27th consecutive double-double, the second longest streak of double-doubles in NCAA Division I history.
Â
Spanou passes RMU Hall of Famer Elise James who had held the record at 1,120 since 2000. Spanou is averaging 12.0 rebounds per game over her career bolstered by the best rebounding season in RMU history last year when she had 451 boards. The senior has led the Northeast Conference in rebounding each of the last two seasons.
Â
She also has a double-double in the last 27 games, the second-longest streak in NCAA Division I history only trailing the legendary streak of 112 by Courtney Paris of Oklahoma.
Â
"I'm really happy with the energy we brought to the game. It's the type of energy we need day in and day out," said 11th year RMU head coach
Sal Buscaglia. "It was great that all 12 players played nearly double-digit minutes as well as five players scoring in double-digits. It was great to see
Lou Mataly continue to progress coming off her ACL injury. Of course, congratulations go to Artemis for now achieving the career rebounding record at RMU. Rebounding is all about hard work and Artemis epitomizes that."
Â
The Colonials had five players in double-digits scoring. Spanou had 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting while also dishing out six assists and rejecting two shots. Freshman
Anna Niki Stamalamprou (Thessaloniki, Greece / Aristotelio College of Thessaloniki) had a season-best 13 points. Rookie
Rebeca Navarro (Galicia, Spain / Les Sieges Palmas) and sophomore
Lou Mataly (Toulouse, France / Lycee-Bellevue) each had season-highs with 12 points. Sophomore
Ashley Ravelli (Milano, Italy / The Hun School) chipped in 10 points.
Â
Robert Morris broke this game open early, shooting 56.9 percent (29-51) from the field, the fifth-best shooting performance in the 38-year history of the program. The Colonials also went 9-of-16 (56.3 percent) from long range.
Â
Coppin State hit two shots in the first 57 seconds following the tip-off, but then would be held without a field goal by Robert Morris for over 11 minutes. The Colonials used the suffocating defense to go on a 17-1 run taking a 19-5 lead midway through the opening frame. After consecutive baskets by the Eagles, another long run, this one 17-3, put RMU up 28-14 with 2:30 left in the half. Robert Morris held on to take a 40-20 lead into the break.
Â
By that point, Spanou had already grabbed 13 rebounds while Stamalamprou had scored 12 of her season-high 13 points.
Â
Offensive flow was hard to come by in a second half that was constantly interrupted by whistles. The teams combined for 30 fouls and 41 free throws. The Colonials pushed the margin to a game-high 35 points, 72-37, with 7:58 left in regulation.
Â
Five Coppin State players reached double-digits in scoring led by 14 from Kyra Coleman. Bria Harris and Larrisa Carter each had 11 while Amber Griffin and Ashle Craig added 10 each.
Â
Robert Morris plays host to UMBC next Saturday, Nov. 23, in a 1:30 p.m. game.
