Pittsburgh, Pa. - Robert Morris University women's basketball senior forward Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Nea Smyrni) is one of five finalists for the Dapper Dan 2013 Sportswoman of the Year. The Dapper Dan Charities, founded by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in 1936, raises contributions for western Pennsylvania charities and has named a Sportsman of the Year since 1939 and a Sportswoman of the Year since 1999. It's one of the most prestigious awards available to sports figures in western Pennsylvania.
Spanou has recorded 28 consecutive double-doubles through Nov. 23, the second-longest streak in NCAA Division I history and became the Colonials all-time leading rebounder earlier this season.Â
The Greek-born forward was named the Northeast Conference Player of the Year following the 2012-13 season, a season in which she led the nation in rebounding at 15.6 per game and topped the NEC in scoring at 19.1 points per game. A three-time All-NEC selection, Spanou also became the team's first all-American, earning the honor from NetScouts.com.
She destroyed the Colonials single-season rebounding mark of 367 as she pulled down 451 caroms. She finished her junior campaing with 26 double-doubles in 29 games. She eclipsed the 20-point mark 14 times this season en route to becoming the 18th member of RMU's 1,000-point club. Rounding out her numbers, Spanou finished seventh among her league peers with 57 steals, an average of nearly two per game.
The Dapper Dan 2013 Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year award recipients will be confirmed by the Dapper Dan Charities executive committee and announced in mid-December. They will then be recognized at the 78th annual Dapper Dan Dinner & Sports Auction on Thurs., Feb. 6.
