WATERTOWN, Mass. – December 6, 2013 - The Robert Morris University men's ice hockey team kicked off a three-game road trip with the first of two games this weekend against Bentley on Friday evening.  A late third-period goal was all the offense that RMU could generate as the Colonials dropped the contest by a score of 4-1.

Robert Morris (2-9-1, 2-4-1 AHA) allowed Bentley (6-7-1, 5-2-1 AHA) to score the first goal of the game just 70 seconds after RMU's first power-play opportunity had expired.  Max French netted the goal for the Falcons at the 7:25 mark of the first period.

In the second period, the Falcons would double their lead with a power-play goal.  Alex Grieve made the score 2-0 in favor of Bentley at the 8:35 mark of the period.

Bentley picked up a second power-play goal in the middle frame as Grieve gave the Falcons a 3-0 lead with his second goal of the game that came with less than three minutes remaining in the second period.

Grieve would record the natural hat trick with a third-period goal that came at the 8:33 mark of the final frame.

The lone RMU goal of the evening came with just 16 seconds to play in the third period.  Zac Lynch (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Bay State Breakers) was netted his fifth goal of the season during a scramble in the crease of Bentley's netminder Branden Komm, but the goal wasn't officially credited to the sophomore until it was confirmed by video review.

The review occurred at the next whistle which just happened to be the horn to signal the end of the game.  The referees awarded the goal while the two teams were shaking hands and then had to return to their respective benches to replay the final seconds of the contest.

Terry Shafer (Penfield, N.Y. / New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs) earned the start for the Colonials and recorded 24 saves while suffering the his eighth loss of the season.

Dalton Izyk (Oswego, N.Y. / Indiana Ice) replaced Shafer in net when the third period started.  Despite allowing the one goal in the final frame, Izyk finished with 15 saves in his first action since he started the second game of the season.

In just 12 games this season, Lynch now has five goals and nine assists for 14 points.  Now a sophomore, Lynch needed 34 games during his freshman season to put up those same numbers.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow in the second game of the series that is scheduled to start at 7:05 p.m.
