Youngstown, Ohio – Redshirt senior Steve Mitchell (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Pittsburgh Central Catholic) grabbed a pair of runner-up finishes as the Robert Morris University men's indoor track & field team opened its season Friday evening at the YSU Icebreaker at the Watson and Tressel Training Site.

The meet featured 14 teams from Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York, and team scoring was not kept.

Mitchell fell just short of breaking a school record in the shot put as he launched it 16.92 meters. The toss was not only a personal best but also the second-longest throw in program history and the best in a non-championship meet.

Mitchell also finished in the runner-up position in the weight throw as he flung it 16.99 meters. Senior Kelton Mehls (Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern) notched sixth in the weight throw with a distance of 15.11 meters.

Junior Malcolm Ayers (Clarksburg, Md. / Clarksburg), senior Abraham Roy (Middletown, Pa. / Middletown Area) and junior Shane Witmyer (West Lawn, Pa. / Wilson) all notched multiple career bests while finishing in the top six in both of their events.

Ayers finished third in the 200-meter dash (22.20 seconds) and came home sixth in the 400-meter dash (50.18 seconds).

Roy was barely behind Ayers as he came in fourth (22.22 seconds) in the 200-meter. He matched that effort in the 400-meter as he claimed another fourth-place finish while breaking 50 seconds for the first time in his career (49.91 seconds).

Witmyer took second in the high jump (2.01 meters) and finished fourth in the long jump (6.77 meters).

Other Colonials to bring home top-eight finishes include sophomore Sachin Natarajan (Plainsboro, N.J. / West Windsor-Plainsboro North), who was fourth in the 1,000 meters (2:48.19), sophomore Logan Haines-Douglas (Vandergrift, Pa. / Kiski Area), who was seventh in the 200-meter dash (career-best 22.62 seconds), and junior Darryl Jones (Blairsville, Pa. / Blairsville), who was eighth in the 3,000 meters in his first time running that distance collegiately (9:20.83).

With its season-opening meet in the rearview mirror, RMU will now pause for the semester break and will resume action Saturday, Jan. 11, at the Penn State Relays.
