Moon Township, Pa. –
The Robert Morris University men's outdoor track & field team was honored Tuesday with the 2014 Northeast Conference Team Sportsmanship Award, it was announced by the league office. Also earning the honor from RMU as part of its 2014 spring awards was women's golf.

Thanks to its pair of spring honors, Robert Morris joined Sacred Heart in garnering a league-high four sportsmanship awards in 2013-14. Also earning sportsmanship awards for RMU in 2013-14 were men's cross country and men's indoor track & field.

Instituted by league Presidents in 2008, the awards are designed to acknowledge the team in each conference sport that, in the opinion of its peers, most closely demonstrates good sportsmanship based on the NEC Principles of Sportsmanship and Standards of Conduct. Voting is conducted at the conclusion of each season by each team and head coach, who ranks teams within the conference based on a set of criteria.

"The NEC has historically placed a very strong emphasis on good sportsmanship, and we continue to see the benefits of that commitment throughout our regular season and championship season competition," said NEC Commissioner Noreen Morris. "This year, eleven of the possible fifteen institutions eligible for the award were recognized for their dedication to playing with dignity and respect for their sport and their opponents. On behalf of the NEC Council of Presidents, I congratulate both our spring award winners as well as all of the institutions that received a team sportsmanship award throughout this year. We truly appreciate the continued efforts made to set a good example for their peers as well as the fans and youngsters attending the events."
