Moon Township, Pa. – Senior Chris Carper (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) of the Robert Morris University men's outdoor track & field team competes at the NCAA Championships for the second straight year when he participates in the javelin Saturday at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.

The 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships begin today and runs through Saturday, with the javelin slated to begin at 3:35 p.m. eastern standard time on the final day of competition. Carper enters the meet at No. 4 of the second flight.

Carper enters the 2014 NCAA Championships as the No. 1 seed among the 24 student-athletes competing Saturday after unleashing a toss of 73.09 meters (239'9") to win the individual championship at the 2014 NCAA East Preliminary Round at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.

Carper's distance at the NCAA East Preliminary Round is a school record in the javelin, and he now owns each of the top 10 marks in program history in the event. Rounding out the top five entering the 2014 NCAA Championships in the javelin is Raymond Dykstra of Kentucky (72.16 meters), Tomas Guerra of Western Kentucky (71.46), Jay Stell of Navy (71.35) and McLean Lipschutz of Monmouth (70.38).

Each of the top eight finishers at the 2014 NCAA Championships will earn All-America First Team status, while finishing ninth through 16th earns the student-athlete All-America Second Team honors. Last season, Carper became the first male student-athlete from RMU to participate in the NCAA Championships, earning All-America Honorable Mention accolades after finishing 19th with a toss of 63.96 meters (209'10").

On the 2014 season, Carper has posted each of the top three marks in school history in the javelin as well as five of the top 10. He opened the year with a throw of 72.13 meters (236'8") at the Wake Forest Open (3/23/14) and also won the individual title in the event at the Bennie Benson Memorial Invitational (4/12/14), which was hosted by the Colonials at the RMU Island Sports Center, with a toss of 71.09 meters (233'3").

Carper defended his championship in the javelin at the 2014 NEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a distance of 67.31 meters (220'10") and also earned All-East Coast status by finishing second in the event at the 2014 IC4A/ECAC Championships thanks to a final tally of 70.28 meters (230'7").

Throughout his career, Carper is a four-time All-NEC honoree in the javelin, twice earning All-NEC First Team (2013, 2014) status and two All-NEC Second Team (2011, 2012) accolades.
