Spanou's Career-Best 32 Points Sinks Wagner

Box Score

Moon Township, Pa. / Charles L. Sewall Center - Robert Morris University junior forward Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Nea Smyrni) matched the second-half scoring output of the visiting Wagner Seahawks as the Colonials women's basketball team cruised to a 57-39 victory at the Charles L. Sewall Center Saturday afternoon.  The Colonials improve to 6-16 overall and 5-6 in the Northeast Conference while the Seahawks slip to 2-20 and 1-10 in league games.

Spanou finished the game with a career-high 32 points and ripped down a game-best 18 rebounds to earn her 17th consecutive double-double and 19th of the year.  She went 10-of-22 from the field and 11-of-12 from the charity stripe. The junior added four steals, three assists and a block as well.

"I'm really proud of how we hung in there and were able to take the game under control early in the second half," said RMU head coach Sal Buscaglia. "Artemis' performance was amazing and Anna (Gailite's) career-high for rebounds really helped us out, too. I'm incredibly proud of these young ladies in the way that they challenged themselves and got through the game despite most of them knowing they would have to play almost the whole contest."

Senior forward Anna Gailite (Riga, Latvia / Riga Secondary #47) grabbed a career-best 12 rebounds and added six points, four blocks, three assists and two steals to a full stat line. Freshman guard Ashley Ravelli (Milan, Italy / The Hun School) tacked on 10 points as she knocked down a pair of treys.

Carrying a three-point lead at halftime, Robert Morris held Wagner to three points in the first 10 minutes of the second half. RMU used that time to go on a 15-3 run and push their lead to 44-29 after back-to-back lay-ups by Spanou. The second half surge started with five consecutive points by Ravelli.

When the second 20 minutes was over, Spanou had scored 13 points, the same total that the Seahawks would reach in the second half. The Colonials biggest lead in the game turned out to be the final score, 57-39.

The Colonials jumped on top of the Seahawks to open the game, surging out to a 16-5 lead just 7:25 after the tip. The next seven points, including a trey by Wagner's leading score Marie-Laurence Archambault who finished with 19 points, cut the lead to four points, 16-12, just two minutes later. The Seahawks completed the comeback, tying the game at 24-24, before Spanou scored five points over the final three minutes to give the home team a 29-26 lead heading into the break.

RMU held Wagner to 25.0 percent (12-48) shooting for the game and allowed just four points in the paint.  The Colonials, meanwhile, converted at 32.8 percent (20-61) while canning 13-of-14 (92.9 percent) of their free throws.

Robert Morris hosts Saint Francis (Pa.) in a 7:00 p.m. game Monday, Feb. 11, at the Sewall Center.
