Box Score Moon Township, Pa. / Charles L. Sewall Center - The Robert Morris University women's basketball team avenged an earlier
season loss to Saint Francis University this season by posting a 67-53 against
the Red Flash Monday night. Freshman guard Ashley Ravelli (Milan, Italy / The
Hun School) scored a season-high 22 points as the Colonials won for the third
time in the last four games to improve to 7-16 overall and 6-6 in Northeast
Conference play. The Red Flash slip to 13-10 and 8-4 in league games.
"This was a great win for us. It showed the heart and
determination of these great young ladies," said RMU head coach Sal Buscaglia. "I
told them before the game that if they put all their heart into tonight's game,
it would bring them victory. We've now won three of our last four games - the only
loss coming in double-overtime - and we're starting to feel good about
ourselves and these ladies certainly deserve to feel that way."
Ravelli went 6-of-17 from the floor, hit 7-of-her-8 free
throw attempts and buried three three-pointers while playing all 40 minutes.
Junior Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Nea Smyrni) continued her double-double
roll stretching her streak to 18 games by scoring 18 points and pulling down a
game-best 15 rebounds. She added three assists, three blocks and three steals
as well. Spanou did the majority of damage from the chalk canning 10-of-13
tries.
Senior Anna Gailite (Riga, Latvia / Riga Secondary #47)
added 12 points and five rebounds. The senior also had five blocks, moving to
within six blocks of the career record (165) and three blocks of the season record
(54).
The Colonials jumped all over the Red Flash in the first
half, taking advantage of 16 first half turnovers to build a 33-20 lead at the
break. RMU extended a six-point lead to 15 points with a 14-5 run starting at the
9:53 mark of the first half to the 2:28 point. During the surge, RMU forced
eight turnovers and Ravelli knocked down a pair of three-pointers and Spanou
tallied four points.
The lead extended to as many as 17 points, but the last four
points belonged to Saint Francis who got the final three on a buzzer-beating
heave from Alexa Hayward.
The Colonials pushed the margin to 18 points, 42-24, in the
second half. A 13-5 surge later in the half by the visiting Red Flash cut the margin
to nine points, on a Shene Fleming lay-up. The Red Flash would get no closer as
RMU converted 11-of-12 free throws in the final two minutes and won going away,
67-53.
Alli Williams had 14 points and 14 rebounds to pace the
visiting Red Flash in both categories. Rebecca Keegan tacked on nine points and
Shene Fleming kicked in seven points and 11 boards.
Robert Morris next travels to Sacred Heart for a 1:00 p.m.
game Saturday, Feb. 16.
