Moon Township, Pa. - Robert Morris
University women's basketball junior Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Nea
Smyrni) was named the Choice Hotels Northeast Conference Player of the Week after leading the Colonials to a
pair of league victories. Spanou averaged 25.0 points and 16.5 rebounds,
improving her national-best rebounding average to 15.0 boards per contest, 1.5
more than anyone else in Division I.
Doing it all in wins over Wagner and Saint Francis, Spanou
averaged 3.5 steals, 3.0 assists and 2.0 blocks per contest in addition to her
monster point and rebounding totals. Spanou reached the 30-point mark for the
second time this season, and the first in conference play, when she poured in
32 points to go along with 18 rebounds during a 57-39 win over Wagner.
Two days later, she helped the Colonials even the season
series with Keystone State rival Saint Francis. Recording a double-double for the 18th
consecutive outing, Spanou tallied 18 points and 15 rebounds. Spanou drew a lot
of contact, often working her way to the free throw line last week. Taking advantage of the numerous
opportunities, she shot 84 percent (21-for-25) from the charity stripe.
Spanou needs 33 rebounds to tie the RMU single-season record
of 367 set by all-time leading carom-collector Elise James. Spanou is also set
to become the second Colonial player to surpass 1,000 career boards as she
currently sits idle with 978.
The Colonials travel to Connecticut this weekend for a pair
of league tilts starting with a 1:00 p.m. game at Sacred Heart Saturday, Feb.
