Colonials Fall on Overtime Penalty Shot

Box Score

Wentzville, Mo. - The Robert Morris University women's hockey team suffered a tough loss Friday evening at the Lindenwood Ice Arena as the Lions scored on an overtime penalty shot to top the Colonials, 4-3.

RMU took an early lead in the contest when sophomore forward Maddie Collias (Roseville, Mich. / Belle Tire) buried a shot into the net passed Lindenwood netminder Nicole  Hensley at 11:27 of the first period to put RMU up, 1-0. The first Colonial goal was assisted by sophomore forward Katelyn Scott (Brighton, Mich. / Belle Tire) for her fifth assist of the season and senior assistant captain Jamie Joslin (Richmond Hill, Ontario / Aurora Panthers) for her 11th of the season. The goal marks the fifth of Collias' sophomore campaign.

The Colonials outshot the Lions, 17-5 and had two power play chances in the first period while RMU did not commit a single penalty.

After the first half of the second period was evenly played, Robert Morris would again capitalize on scoring chances first as sophomore forward Katie Fergus (Oakville, Ontario / Brampton Jr. Thunder) put home a rebounded shot from Collias to put the Colonials with 2-0 at 6:45 of the second period. Sophomore defenseman Kelsey Gunn (Smith Falls, Ontario / Niagara University) hit Collias with a pass for the initial shot on goal to tally the secondary assist on the score. The second RMU goal marks the fifth of the season for Fergus while the assist is the fourth of the year for Gunn and eighth for Collias and second point of tonight's game. Collias has now tallied two multi-point performances in three games against Lindenwood this season while Fergus has registered three points in three games against the Lions.

At 19:48 of the second period, the Lions would get on the board after a power play goal 1:38 into their first power play opportunity of the game to bring Lindenwood within one of RMU. Junior defenseman Katie Erickson tallied the first Lindenwood goal with assists going to Jocelyn Slattery and Lyndsay Kirhkam.

Each team produced a quality performance for the entire third period, however Lindenwood recovered a turnover in the defensive zone to then score a short-handed goal with less than a minute remaining in the final frame. Kirkham scored the game-tying goal for her second point of the contest to force an overtime period.

Less than one minute into the overtime period, Robert Morris was charged with a delay of game penalty which caused a Lindenwood penalty shot. Sophomore forward Alison Wickenheiser took the penalty shot for the Lions and would eventually tally the game-winning goal to defeat RMU.

Despite the loss, RMU outshot Lindenwood 41-29 in the contest while only committing three penalties and winning 30 faceoffs.

Senior goaltender Kristen DiCiocco (Niagara Falls, Ontario / Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres) earned the start in net for Robert Morris. DiCiocco registered a 26-save performance on the evening, 12 of which came in the second period.

Robert Morris is now 8-8-1 in College Hockey America (CHA) contests while Lindenwood moves to 5-9-3 in league games. The two squads will meet tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 16 at 3 p.m. (ET) for game two of the series.
