Spanou Sets Record For Rebounds In Loss

Box Score

Hamden, Conn. / TD Bank Sports Center - Robert Morris University women's basketball junior forward Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Nea Smyrni) pulled down 19 rebounds to set a single-season record with 378 caroms this season and eclipse the 1,000-rebound mark as well. The Colonials lost, 60-46, to the Northeast Conference-leading Quinnipiac Bobcats at TD Bank Sports Center Monday afternoon.

The Colonials slip to 7-18 overall and 6-8 in the NEC while Quinnipiac improves to 22-2 and stay perfect at 13-0 in league games.

"Although we came out slow to start the game, I thought overall we played very hard, especially for the second game of the road trip," said RMU head coach Sal Buscaglia. "We battled to the end. I think fatigue really set in and we couldn't get over the hump although we did make some short runs. We need to get some well-deserved rest and get geared up for a very important game Saturday."

Spanou now has 1,010 career rebounds and is the second player in team history to achieve that feat. She has 378 rebounds this season, eclipsing the mark of 367 that was set by Elise James in 1999-00. The 6-2 junior from Greece is 110 rebounds away from tying the career record for caroms.

"I want to congratulate Artemis for breaking the season rebounding record in addition to being over 1,000 rebounds for her career. Rebounding is a skill, but it also takes a great deal of effort and it certainly is an indication of her desire and love for the game," said Buscaglia.

Quinnipiac was able to open the game on an 8-0 run as Felicia Barron, who finished with eight points, hit a pair of early three-pointers. The Bobcats pushed the lead out to 11 points, 23-12, with 4:32 to play in the first half. Back-to-back lay ups by junior forward Anna Kavasila (Cholargos, Greece / Glyfaadas) started an 8-2 run to end the second half that cut the margin to five points, 25-20, at halftime.

Much like the first half, however, the Bobcats rode an impressive run to open the second half to play. Quinnipiac tallied the first seven points of the half with five coming from Jasmine Martin who scored all 12 of her points in the second frame.

Quinnipiac pushed the margin to a game-high 19 points, 48-29, on a shot clock beating lay-in with 11:39 to play. Consecutive jumpers by freshman guard Ashley Ravelli (Milan, Italy / The Hun School) was followed by back-to-back lay-ups by Anna Gailite (Riga, Latvia / Riga Secondary #47) that fueled an 8-2 run and made it an 11-point ball game. Ravelli finished with 10 points while Gailite grabben nine boards.

The Colonials managed to whittle the lead to as few as 12 points down the stretch but the Bobcats managed to hold on for the 60-46 victory.

Brittany McQuain led all scored with 21 points and topped the Bobcats with seven rebounds. RMU outrebounded the host team, 47-40, but committed 19 turnovers to just six for Quinnipiac.

The Colonials return to the Charles L. Sewall Center for their final two home games of the regular season beginning with a 4:00 p.m. game against the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights on Saturday, Feb. 23. The game will also serve as Senior Day.
