Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University men's tennis team continued its 2013 spring season this past weekend by splitting a pair of matches in Western New York, earning a 4-3 win over St. Bonaventure Friday, Feb. 1, before suffering a 5-2 setback at Niagara Saturday, Feb. 2.
The Colonials now own a 2-4 overall record in dual matches on the 2012-13 campaign.
In the victory over the Bonnies, RMU earned singles victories at the No. 1 flight as well as flights four through six.
At No. 1, junior Angus Thomson (Kedron, Australia) posted a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Elliot Fanshel. Also earning singles victories for the Colonials were junior Tarun Kishan (Mississauga, Ontario / Saint Francis Xavier Secondary), senior Andre Coiro (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil) and freshman Juan Andres Hirmas (Padre Las Casas, Chile).
Kishan earned a 6-4, 2-6, 6-0 win over Celso de Vera Rehberger at the fourth singles flight, while Coiro posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Gabriel Cardenas at No. 5.
Hirmas helped Robert Morris seal the victory thanks to a 7-6, 6-3 win over Trevor Haskell at the No. 6 singles flight.
In doubles action against the Bonnies, Thomson and Kishan teamed up for an 8-5 win over de Vera Rehberger and Haskell as the No. 2 flight. It was part of a perfect 2-0 weekend in doubles action for the duo, as they also teamed up at the No. 1 flight to earn an 8-5 win over David Raymond Olivier Dufour-Coursol of Niagara.
Against the Purple Eagles, Coiro and Hirmas picked up singles wins. Coiro defeated Mathieu Lacasse, 3-6, 6-3 and 10-7 at the No. 5 flight, while Hirmas downed Joseph Smithyman, 6-4 and 6-0, at No. 6.
RMU gets back to action with a trip to Fort Wayne, Ind., for a trio of matches beginning Friday, Feb. 15. The Colonials will face off with Chicago State and Youngstown State in a pair of neutral matches, Feb. 15, before closing out its trip Saturday, Feb. 16, at IPFW.
