Box Score

Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. / Pope Center - The Robert Morris University women's basketball team battled the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers for 50 minutes, but in the end it was the host Terriers who made enough plays to secure the 67-63 victory Monday night in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. The Colonials slip to 5-16 overall and 4-6 in the Northeast Conference while the Terriers move to 8-13 and 5-5 in league games.

Junior forward Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Nea Smyrni) had her fourth 20-rebound game of the year as she finished with 18 points and 20 rebounds. RMU outrebounded St. Francis, 50-39, in the game.

Randi Jackson (Oakland, Calif. / Bishop O'Dowd) hit her third trey of the game to put the Colonials on top, 63-60, in the second overtime session. Sarah Benedetti hit a set of free throws to cut the lead to one point with 1:08 to play. After an RMU turnover, Benedetti then splashed a three-pointer to put the Terriers on top, 65-63, with just over 30 seconds to go. RMU had three chances in the closing seconds but were unable to hit from close range and Jaymee Veney knocked down two free throws to ice the game.

St. Francis made the first move of a back-and-forth first half, using a 7-0 run that featured scoring from a trio of players, the only three that would score for the host team in the opening half. Back-to-back field goals by Anna Gailite (Riga, Latvia / Riga Secondary #47) kick-started a 9-2 RMU run that was capped by a trey from freshman Ashley Ravelli (Milan, Italy / The Hun School) and a lay-up by Anna Kavasila (Cholargos, Greece / Glyfaados).

Over the next nine minutes, however, the Terriers went on a 15-4 run to push their lead to 25-16. Spanou scored the final four points of the first half to make it a 25-20 contest at the break.

Robert Morris trailed 32-26 in the second half when Kavasila and Kelly Hartwell (Woodbridge, Va. / Gar-Field) hit short jumpers to cut the lead to one point. After a Benedetti trey, Ravelli hit a three and Spanou made a lay-up to give the Colonials their first lead since 9:55 was left in the first half. Over the final 8:30, the game would be tied six times as the teams battled to a 53-53 deadlock after 40 minutes.

Hartwell and Spanou each scored in the first overtime while Jessica Kaufman made a lay-up and Benedetti hit a pair of free throws for St. Francis.

Ravelli finished with 13 points for RMU and Hartwell added 10 points and six rebounds. Kavasila chipped in four points while grabbing nine rebounds. Five Terriers players reached double-digits in points led by Benedetti's 14. Veney tack on 13 points while Jessica Kaufman, Eilidh Simpson and Leah Fechko each had 10 points.

The Colonials return to the Charles L. Sewall Center this Saturday, Feb. 9, when they host the Wagner Seahawks in a 4:00 p.m. game.
