Box Score

Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Robert Morris University women's hockey team will advance to the final four of the College Hockey America (CHA) Tournament thanks to a 2-0 victory over Lindenwood Saturday afternoon at the RMU Island Sports Center.

RMU continued its impressive play from yesterday's contest to dominate the first period over Lindenwood. The Colonials put 14 shots on net in the first frame while RMU held the Lions to single digits in shots with seven. Robert Morris had just one power play chance in the first compared to Lindenwood's two.

Both squads skated another 15 minutes at a 0-0 tie until the Colonials scored the opening goal of the contest with 4:32 on the clock in the second period. Senior captain Dayna Newsom (Oakville, Ontario / Ontario Oakville) broke up a pass between Lindenwood players at center ice that allowed sophomore forward Katie Fergus (Oakville, Ontario / Burlington Jr. Barracudas) to pass the puck to junior assistant captain Thea Imbrogno (Etobicoke, Ontario / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs). Imbrogno skated the puck from the blue line into Lion territory and sniped a shot over the left shoulder of the Lindenwood goaltender for the score. The assist is the second of the season for Newsom and sixth for Fergus. The goal marks the 11th of the year for Imbrogno.

RMU would again out shoot the Lions throughout the second period while putting four shots on goal on its two power play attempts, but the Colonials could not find the net on their 10 chances.

Just three minutes into the final frame, the Colonials added to their lead with a put-back goal from Newsom. Imbrogno dumped the puck to Fergus who skated behind the cage and put a wrap-around shot on net that was saved by Lindenwood goaltender Taylor Fairchild. The rebounded shot bounced perfectly to the stick of Newsom who found the net off of the post from the left of the crease to put RMU up, 2-0. The goal is the fifth of Newsom's senior season while the assist is the sixth for Fergus and 12th for Imbrogno.

RMU skated to the 2-0 victory as it outshot Lindenwood 42-24 and won 40 of 48 faceoffs.

Today's contest marks the first time this  season, in a game when Robert Morris has scored two or more goals, that the same three Colonial players tallied points on each goal. Imbrogno, Fergus and Newsom each tallied multi-point efforts against the Lions. The multi-point performance is the fifth of the year for Imbrogno, third for Fergus and first for Newsom.

Newsom now sits ninth all-time in program history for career games played with 134. Imbrogno continues to rank third in Colonial history with 88 career points and second with 49 career assist. With today's goal, Imbrogno climbed to ladder to sit fourth all-time in career goals with 39.

The RMU penalty kill team went a perfect 6-6 in game two against Lions. The defensive unit combined to go a perfect 15-15 in the series with Lindenwood marking the second time this season RMU has successfully stifled 15 consecutive power plays, but the first time the Colonials have combined to do so in two consecutive matchups against the same opponent.

This season, as a team, the Colonials now rank second all-times for most wins in a single season with 15. The 2012-13 squad has also set a new team single-season record for shots on goal with 1,133.

Senior goalie Kristen DiCiocco (Nigara Falls, Ontario / Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres) earned the start in net for Robert Morris in the afternoon contest. DiCiocco earned her second shutout of the season stopping all 24 shots she faced. The senior now ranks second all-time in RMU history with five career shutouts. Today's contest marks the 18th occasion this season in which DiCiocco has recorded 20 or more saves in a game. In the series with the Lions, DiCiocco made 65 saves to tally a 0.36 goals against average and a .985 save percentage seeing 156 minutes of action.

Advancing to the Final Four of the CHA Tournament, RMU will faceoff against the No. 1 seed Mercyhurst Friday, March 8 in Erie, Pa. at the Mercyhurst Ice Arena. This season the Colonials have won three of four games against the Lakers including three straight wins handing Mercyhurst its only league losses of the year. The time of puck drop is yet to be determined.
