RMU Novice 4 Highlights Knecht Cup

The Robert Morris University women's rowing team continued its 2013 spring campaign this past weekend by taking part in the Knecht Cup at Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J.


Highlighting the competition for RMU was the Novice 4, which placed ninth out of a pool of 41 boats after competing in heat competition, the semifinals and the petite finals.

The boat, which consisted of sophomore Victoria Lomax (Willingboro, N.J. / John W. Hallahan Catholic) as the coxswain, freshman Donna Muschar (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Perry) as the bow, freshmen Paige Oster (Mantua, Ohio / Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and Emily Foster (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Trinity) and freshman Rebekah Noorlag (Beaver, Pa. / Beaver County Christian) as the stroke, finished with a time of 8:29.14 in the petite final to claim third and finish ninth overall out of 41 boats.

In heat action, the Robert Morris Novice 4 posted a time of 8:27.78 in the fourth heat, followed by a mark of 8:26.22 in the third semifinal to advance to the petite final.

"The Knecht Cup continues to emerge as a very competitive regatta year after year," head coach Midge McPhail-Burks said. "We were disappointed with the varsity results this time but are very excited to see our walk-on novices continue to get faster each week. To finish ninth out of 41 very competitive crews is a wonderful accomplishment."

Also competing for the Colonials at the Knecht Cup was the Varsity 4 and Varsity 8 boats.

In the Varsity 4, RMU placed fourth in its heat, missing the semifinals by one spot. The Colonials earned a time of 8:17.08 in the fifth heat, trailing Bucknell (8:00.90), Buffalo (8:03.80) and George Mason (8:06.96).

The boat consisted of sophomore Laura Mooradian (St. Catharines, Ontario / Denis Morris) as the coxswain, sophomore Heather Hodges (Valencia, Pa. / Mars Area) as the bow, sophomore Kristin Fay (Philadelphia, Pa. / Philadelphia), freshman Caitlin Ryan (Pittsford, N.Y. / Pittsford Sutherland) and junior Megan Coleman (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Northgate) as the stroke.

The five members of the RMU Varsity 4 also were part of the top boat of the RMU Varsity 8, placing sixth in its heat with a time of 7:36.85. Also in the boat for the Colonials were sophomore Julie Miller (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Catholic) as the bow, sophomores Brianna Hellier (Beaver, Pa. / Beaver Area) and Kelsey Porter (Mount Pleasant, Pa. / Mount Pleasant) and senior Ashley Wright (Gibsonia, Pa. / Pine-Richland). Mooradian served as the coxswain of the first Varsity 8, while Fay was the stroke.

The RMU Second Varsity 8 also earned sixth in its heat with a time of 7:36.26.

Comprising the boat for the Colonials was freshman Angelica Tomlinson (Dayton, Ohio / Chaminade-Julienne) as the coxswain, senior Caitlin Mullin (Irwin, Pa. / Penn-Trafford) as the bow, junior Rebecca Cole (Glenville, Pa. / Christian School of York), sophomore Erica Sablofski (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Plum), freshman Bridget Robinson (Voorhees, N.J. / Eastern), sophomore Cassandra Grafton (Hartstown, Pa. / Jamestown Area), senior Jamie Witsch (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Catholic), freshman Samantha Gunn (Buffalo, N.Y. / Holy Angels Academy) and freshman Kelley Bittner (Gibsonia, Pa. / Hampton) as the stroke.

Robert Morris has its final tuneup for the 2013 MAAC Championships Saturday, April 20, by taking part in the Black Rock Cup in Buffalo, N.Y.
