Austin’s Score Lifts RMU To Win In Season Opener

Robert Morris off to 1-0 start with 1-0 win.

Moon Township, Pa. / North Athletic Complex — The Robert Morris University women's soccer team opened its 2013 campaign with a 1-0 win against Northern Kentucky at North Athletic Complex Friday afternoon. It was the first meeting between the squads.

The game's lone score came off the foot of senior Katie Austin (Dallastown, Pa. / Dallastown) in the 58th minute. Winning a ball in the midfield, she turned and beat her defender down the right side before launching a tough angle shot that went over the keeper and slid under the bar.

The best chance of the first half belonged to Northern Kentucky. A curling in-swinger of a corner kick by Elle Nguyen was knocked off the crossbar by junior keeper Becky Schoenecker (Cheswick, Pa. / Fox Chapel) before coming down on the goal line. Sophomore defender Jenny Eriksson Palmgren (Sundsvall, Sweden / Skvadern) just beat a Norse forward to the carom clearing it out of danger to keep the game scoreless through the opening frame.

Schoenecker and sophomore Chelsea de Jager (Grimsby, Ontario / Governor Simcoe) combined for five saves and the shutout. de Jager, who played the second half, was credited with the victory.

The Norse outshot RMU 16-8 and edged RMU in corner kicks, 6-5.

Robert Morris returns to the pitch Sunday, Aug. 25, when the Niagara Purple Eagles visit North Atlhetic Complex for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
