Robert Morris Places Second at Otterbein

Colonials claim first-place points in four events

Westerville, Ohio – The Robert Morris University men's indoor track & field team tallied first-place points in four events en route to a second-place finish at the Otterbein Invitational Saturday at the Clement Center.
 
RMU tallied 101.50 points to rank second among 12 teams while taking part in its first scored meet of the season.
 
Redshirt senior Steve Mitchell (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Pittsburgh Central Catholic) won the shot put with his heave of 16.49 meters, the sixth-longest toss in school history. He also has now surpassed the IC4A qualifying standard in the shot put in each of his three events this season. Mitchell added a third-place finish in the weight throw with a mark of 16.98 meters.
 
Junior Richard Njenga (Ephrata, Pa. / Ephrata) won the triple jump with a leap of 14.21 meters. He also took seventh in the long jump thanks to a new personal best performance of 6.53 meters.
 
Senior Nicolas Gentile (Sarver, Pa. / Freeport) won the 800-meter run by stopping the clock at 1:56.74. He also ran the anchor leg of RMU's 4x400 meter relay squad that placed second in a time of 3:27.43.
 
Joining Gentile on RMU's 4x400 squad were senior Abraham Roy (Middletown, Pa. / Middletown Area), junior Malcolm Ayers (Clarksburg, Md. / Clarksburg) and senior Dorian Rumble (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Penn Hills).

Freshman Ryan Hertzog (Glenville, Pa. / South Western), making his season debut, came in second in the 5000 meters but tallied a full 10 points as he was the first NCAA athlete to cross the finish line. He clocked in at 16:09.99.
 
Junior Shane Witmyer (West Lawn, Pa. / Wilson) notched a pair of top-five finishes Saturday. He placed fourth in the long jump (6.68 meters) and fifth in the high jump (1.93 meters). Freshman Justin Baker (New Enterprise, Pa. / North Bedford) was right behind Witmyer in the high jump as he placed sixth with a jump of 1.88 meters.
 
Freshman Andy Smigiera (West Seneca, N.Y. / West Seneca East), a defensive back on the football field, made his track debut Saturday and finished third in the 200-meter dash in 23.06 seconds.
 
Junior Grant Kuiawa (Jefferson Hills, Pa. / Thomas Jefferson) was third in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.50 seconds. Also finishing in third place in a race was senior Fred Thompson (Turtle Creek, Pa. / Woodland Hills) who posted a time of 2:00.90 in the 800-meter run.
 
Other Colonials to earn points on the day include senior Michael Molchany (Ephrata, Pa. / Ephrata), who came in sixth in the 5000 meters (16:52.08), and senior Kelton Mehls (Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern), who was sixth in the weight throw (14.24 meters).
 
RMU will once again head to the Buckeye State next weekend as it resumes action at the Marietta Open Saturday, Jan. 25.
