Moon Township, Pa. / Charles L. Sewall Center – Senior forward
Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Nea Smyrni) set yet another record as the
Robert Morris University women's basketball team dispatched Wagner, 74-63, in a Northeast Conference game at the Sewall Center Monday afternoon. Spanou finished the game with 30 points and 19 rebounds to earn her 73rd career double-double and eclipse the NEC record of 72 set by Saint Francis University's Jess Zinoble in 2000. Spanou has a double-double in 24 consecutive league games and added six assists, two steals and two blocks to her stat line Monday.
Â
"I like the way we executed in the second half, but this young team still has to learn that you have play a 40-minute game," said 11th year RMU head coach
Sal Buscaglia. "I'm concerned about our Monday games – we have not played up to the level that we should be playing at in those second conference games of the weekend.
Â
However, there were some very good bright spots today. Artemis was outstanding and showed great leadership. Kudos to her for setting another NEC record. Anna Niki I thought was a big plus as well as
Jolie Olingende.
Kelly Hartwell and
Ashley Ravelli I thought played very hard and made some great hustle plays. Even though we're in first place at the moment, we have four road games ahead of us that are going to be crucial."
Â
Freshman
Anna Niki Stamolamprou (Thessaloniki, Greece / Aristotelio College of Thessaloniki) scored 15 points while redshirt-junior
Jolie Olingende (Kinshasha, Democratic Republic of the Congo / Arizona Western) just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Â
Tied at halftime, the Colonials (9-8, 5-1 NEC) outscored the visiting Seahawks (3-14, 2-4 NEC,) 43-32, in the second half. Robert Morris forced four turnovers to fuel a 10-2 run to open the second half and push out to an eight-point lead. A three-pointer by Jordyn Peck, who finished with 23 points, stopped the Colonials momentum which eventually led to the game's 10th tie, 52-52, with 7:59 to play.
Â
Following a media timeout, RMU scored seven of the next eight points, five from Spanou including one on a beautiful feed from sophomore
Ashley Ravelli (Milano, Italy / The Hun School), to regain a six-point edge. Wagner again fought back, chipping the lead down to four points on free throws by Peck and Jasmine Nwajei, with 1:58 showing on the game clock.
Â
Robert Morris bowed its neck and did not allow Wagner to score the rest of the way. Meanwhile, they took advantage at the chalk hitting 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to win going away, 74-63.
Â
In the first half, neither team got ahead by more than four points in a half that featured seven lead changes and six ties. Nwajei finished with 22 points for Wagner, joining Peck as the only players with double-digit scoring totals. Ugo Nwaigwe corralled 13 rebounds.
Â
The win finished went 4-0 during its four-game league homestand, but now head to the road for four straight games. The road trip begins Saturday, Feb. 25, with a 2:00 p.m. game at LIU Brooklyn.
