Brooklyn, N.Y. / Steinberg Wellness Center – The Robert Morris University women's basketball team led for all but one minute en route to a 66-52 win at Long Island University Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn, N.Y. The Colonials win, combined with a Bryant loss at Mount St. Mary's, gives Robert Morris sole possession of first place in the Northeast Conference at 6-1. RMU is 10-8 overall while LIU Brooklyn slips to 4-14 and 2-5 in league games.

"I thought we played hard for 40 minutes. Playing on the road is not easy, and we're trying to learn more at each road game. Sometimes, especially when you have young players, you have to learn what it takes to win on the road. Now it's important to enjoy the win - for just one evening - and understand we have another game Monday," said RMU head coach Sal Buscaglia.

Senior forward Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Nea Smyrni) finished the game with 23 points, 15 in the second half, to lead all scorers. She added eight rebounds, five assists and two blocks as well. Freshman guard Anna Niki Stamolamprou (Thessaloniki, Greece / Aristotelio College of Thessaloniki) added 17 points and five rebounds as the Greek tandem combined for 40 points. The rookie also had five assists.

The Colonials erased a three-point deficit with a 10-0 run which started with back-to-back baskets by Spanou and ended with two short jumpers by Stamolamprou giving RMU the lead, 17-10. The lead would remain in favor of RMU for the rest of the half and extended to nine points when Stamolamprou buried her second three of the game with 55 seconds left. LIU had just one field goal in the final nine minutes, scoring its final five points of the first half from the charity stripe.

The teams traded baskets for the opening 10 minutes of the second half before a long two and then a three-pointer by Ashley Ravelli (Milano, Italy / The Hun School), one of three in the game for her, off an inbound play pushed the Colonials on top, 49-36. Following a three-pointer by Sophie Bhasin, RMU extended the lead to a game-high 15 points on a Stamolamprou two and an old-fashioned three-point play by Spanou.

The Blackbirds got as close at seven points down the stretch, but a lay-in by Spanou followed by a long-ball from Ravelli erased any hopes of a comeback for the home squad.

Cleandra Robers had 15, Bhasin tacked on 13 and Aleisha Myers had 10 for LIU.

Robert Morris travels to Fairleigh Dickinson Monday, Jan. 27, for a 7:00 p.m. game against the Knights.
