Marietta, Ohio – Seniors
Abraham Roy (Middletown, Pa. / Middletown Area) and
Fred Thompson (Turtle Creek, Pa. / Woodland Hills) each won events as the
Robert Morris University men's indoor track & field team competed at the Marietta Open #1 Saturday at the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center.

Roy won the 300-meter dash in 35.69 seconds. It was his first time running the rather unconventional distance as a collegian, and he led a RMU contingent that claimed the first three places in the event.

Thompson crossed the finish line first in the 1000 meters in 2:37.30 while running that distance for the first time this year.
Â
Two other Colonials notched runner-up finishes on the day.

Junior
Malcolm Ayers (Clarksburg, Md. / Clarksburg) was second in the 300 in 35.74 seconds. Sophomore
Ryan Brown (Spring Mills, Pa. / Penns Valley) claimed second in the 5000 meters in 15:57.88 while running that distance for the first time at the college level.

Junior
Grant Kuiawa (Jefferson Hills, Pa. / Thomas Jefferson) capped off RMU's 1-2-3 finish in the 300 by finishing third in 37.39 seconds. He also placed fifth in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.01 seconds.

In addition to Kuiawa, two other Colonials netted a pair of top-eight finishes on the day.

Sophomore
Richard Lednak (Apollo, Pa. / Kiski Area) came in fourth in the mile run (4:37.13) and eighth in the 800 meters (2:05.15) while running the latter distance for the first time in college.

Freshman
Greg Miaczynski (Erie, Pa. / Collegiate Academy) placed sixth in the 55-meter hurdles (8.21 seconds) and seventh in the 500-meter run (1:12.42).

Other Colonials to earn top-five finishes on the day were freshman
Andrew Birk (Columbia, Pa. / Hempfield), senior
Chris Carper (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona), senior
Kelton Mehls (Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern) and freshman
Andy Smigiera (West Seneca, N.Y. / West Seneca East).

Mehls was fourth in the weight throw (14.99 meters) while Smigiera occupied the same position in the 55-meter dash (6.63 seconds).

Carper was fifth in the 500 meters (1:11.26) while Birk was fifth in the 1000 meters (2:42.66) while running that distance for the first time this season.

Team scores were not kept at the event.

Robert Morris will next be in action Friday, Jan. 31, as it opens competition in the two-day Penn State National meet. That event will be RMU's final one before contesting the NEC Championships during the second weekend of February.
