No Shame In It:Â The Colonials weren't alone with their preseason loss to Ryerson last Saturday. Five NCAA teams fell to Canadian schools in exhibition play: RMU, Notre Dame, Northeastern, New Hampshire and Quinnipiac. Last year, three of the four NCAA teams to lose to CIS opponents went on to winning seasons.
Onward and Upward:Â The Colonials have finished with a record of .500 or better in four consecutive seasons, going 74-61-19 over that span for a .542 points percentage. Prior to the 2010-11 season, RMU won just 69 of its first 208 games (.379 points percentage) at the NCAA Division I level.
National Recognition:Â Following its scintillating finish to the season, RMU broke into the final two USCHO Top-20 polls of 2013-14. The Colonials collected 55 votes in the last poll, just five behind Ohio State for 20th in Division I. Â They followed that up by earning votes in the USCHO and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine preseason polls, ranking an unofficial 26th in both surveys.
Respect From Their Peers:Â The Colonials were tabbed to finish second in the Atlantic Hockey Association this year in the annual preseason coaches' poll, six points behind league favorite Mercyhurst. The Colonials accumulated three first-place votes as well, helping them to their highest preseason ranking in five AHA campaigns.
Lynch Leads Brainy Bunch:Â Lynch not only won RMU's Most Improved Player award, he also was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Third Team, a first for the men's hockey program. The engineering major posted a 4.0 grade-point average in 2013-14. As a team, the Colonials placed a league-leading 25 players on the AHA all-academic team, the third year in a row they led the league.
Cody Is King of the Hill:Â Wydo enters his senior season as the active Division I leader in goals with 65 - and he's got a healthy lead on runner-up Alex Grieve of AHA rival Bentley (50). Also, Wydo's 107 career points place him fifth on the active D-I scoring list, with Miami's Austin Czarnik (124 points) leading the way.
Scoring in the New Year:Â From Jan. 3 through the end of the 2013-14 season, RMU scored 101 goals in 26 games, the highest goal total in the NCAA during that timeframe. Â The Colonials also held the top spots in assists (173), points (274), shots on goal (944), and blocked shots (406) during the calendar year.
