Robert Morris Blows Out Blackbirds, 79-43

Colonials wins ninth consecutive home game.

Moon Township, Pa. / Charles L. Sewall Center – The Robert Morris University women's basketball team pounded Northeast Conference-rival LIU Brooklyn, 79-43, Thursday night at Charles L. Sewall, winning its ninth consecutive home game. The Colonials improve to 16-9 overall and 12-2 in the NEC while the Blackbirds slip to 7-18 and 5-9 in league games.
 
"I thought we put everything together today. I was really proud of how we executed the game plan which was one of the keys, along with controlling the boards," said RMU head coach Sal Buscaglia. "It wasn't a perfect game, but it certainly was a step in the right direction as we wind down the season and take a step toward the playoffs. The team understands how crucial the next four games are."
 
The Colonials had four different players reach double-figures in scoring and a total of nine players tally a score. As a team, Robert Morris shot 63.6 percent (14-22) in the second half en route to 50.0 percent (27-54) for the game. RMU finished 7-of-19 (36.8 percent) on three-pointers and dominated the paint as well, 34-18, and outrebounded the visiting Blackbirds, 46-21.
 
Freshman guard Anna Niki Stamolamprou (Thessaloniki, Greece / Aristotelio College of Thessaloniki) led all players with 17 points going 7-of-10 from the field and 3-of-5 from three-point range. Senior forward Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Nea Smryi) recorded another double-double with 14 points and 18 rebounds. She is now third all-time in NCAA history with 79 career double-doubles.
 
Freshman Cassie Oursler (Grand Island, N.Y. / Grand Island) tacked on 12 points and seven rebounds along with three blocks. Rookie Rebeca Navarro (Galicia, Spain / Las Siege Palmas) chipped in 10 points and three assists.
 
The Colonials did not allow a double-digit scorer for the second straight game as LIU Brooklyn was led by Sophie Bhasin's eight points. The Blackbirds connected at just 32.0 percent (16-50) for the game.
 
LIU Brooklyn took a short-lived lead, 8-6, with 12:37 left in the first half. A three-pointer by sophomore Ashley Ravelli (Milano, Italy / The Hun School) started a 10-0 run and the Colonials found themselves on top, 16-8, when Stamolamprou scored on a trey.  Robert Morris ended the half on a 12-4 run to lead 34-20 at the break.
 
The Colonials started the second half on a 6-0 and finished it with a 19-0 run to win, 79-43. It was the team's biggest lead of the season and gave RMU its second-biggest margin of victory in the series with the Blackbirds.
 
Robert Morris, fresh off a 4-0 home stand, travels to Bryant this Saturday, February 22, for a 1:00 p.m. game.
