Moon Township, Pa. / Charles L. Sewall Center – Senior forward Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Nea Smyrni) scored a school-record 39 points to lead the Robert Morris University women's basketball team to a 101-95 double-overtime win against Northeast Conference rival St. Francis Brooklyn at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The Colonials improve to 13-9 overall and hold their lead at the top of the NEC at 9-2. St. Francis Brooklyn slips to 15-7 overall and 6-5 in league games.

Spanou also set RMU game records with 19 free throws made and 23 free throw attempts. She finished 10-of-17 from the field, adding nine rebounds, five assists, a block and a steal to a full stat line.

Robert Morris last reached the century mark when it scored a team-record 106 points in a win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Feb. 23, 2002. A clean, tight game Saturday saw just 21 combined turnovers – only nine for the Colonials – along with 14 ties and 18 lead changes. Overtime alone featured eight ties and 10 lead changes.

"This was a well-played game and there were so many big plays by both teams," said 11th year RMU head coach Sal Buscaglia. "It's hard to mention all of them, but certainly Janee Brown's shot going the length of the court in overtime with 4.1 seconds left was just amazing. Artemis Spanou breaking three school records – points, free throws and attempts – as she continues to be a premier Division I player.

"Anna Niki hit some great shots; Rebeca Navarro came through with seven rebounds; Ashley Ravelli found her shooting form; Cassie Oursler continues to contribute while only being a freshman. And, don't let me forget to mention Kelly Hartwell's outstanding defense at the end of the game on their athletic point guard, Jasmine Robinson. We'll certainly enjoy this one, but we have a very tough opponent in Sacred Heart coming in here on Monday."

In the first overtime, Eilidh Simpson drilled a three-pointer to give the visiting Terriers the lead, 79-77, with 38 seconds left. Spanou then finished off an and-one play to put the Colonials on top just 13 seconds later. The Terriers then answered with a three-pointer from the left wing by Sarah Benedetti who finished with 16 points. Kelly Hartwell (Woodbridge, Va. / Gar-Field) answered with a nice scoop to the hoop to knot the game at 82 with under eight seconds left in the first extra session.

Simpson then took the ball the length of the court and was fouled with 4.1 seconds showing. She calmly knocked down two free throws as she finished with 14 points in overtime and 23 overall to put St. Francis on top by two. Freshman guard Janee Brown (Mitchelville, Md. / Holy Cross) took the inbounds, drove the length of the court and splashed a floater as time expired to send the game in double-overtime knotted at 84-84.

In the second overtime, Spanou connected twice from the charity stripe, then hit a hook shot in the lane on a pass from Rebeca Navarro (Galicia, Spain / Las Sieges Palmas). When Navarro drilled a three from the corner, Robert Morris was holding a 93-86 lead with 2:45 left to go. The Terriers were unable to gain ground from that point, matching the Colonials point-for-point as RMU hit 8-of-12 shots from the charity stripe down the stretch.

Freshman Anna Niki Stamolamprou (Thessaloniki, Greece / Aristotelio College of Thessaloniki) finished with 20 points while sophomore guard Ashley Ravelli (Milano, Italy / The Hun School) tacked on 16 points. Ten players managed to score for Robert Morris.

Robert Morris trailed by as many as five points in the first half, but the Colonials scored the last five points and tied the game at 38-38 when Stamolamprou hit a runner as time expired in the opening frame.

The Colonials took their biggest lead of regulation when Ravelli finished a tough shot in traffic to make the score 53-46 with 12:44 showing in regulation. St. Francis fought back to tie the game at 67-67 10 minutes later. Spanou pushed the Colonials on top by two with 12 seconds to play, but Robinson banked in an off-balance 10-footer with seven seconds left in regulation to send the contest into the extra session.

Robert Morris returns to the hardwood Monday, February 10, to play host to second-place Saint Francis University in a game on ESPN3. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
