Shane Witmyer (West Lawn, Pa. / Wilson) led the
Robert Morris University men's indoor track & field team on the opening day of the Northeast Conference Championships at Prince George's S&L Complex.
After the first day of events, RMU sits in fourth place with 17 points.
Witmyer earned a pair of top-five finishes on the day. He claimed fifth in the high jump by clearing 1.95 meters and was also fifth in the long jump with a leap of 6.69 meters. Witmyer's classmate,
Richard Njenga (Ephrata, Pa. / Ephrata), came in slightly behind him in the long jump with a mark of 6.38 meters.
Redshirt senior
Steve Mitchell (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Pittsburgh Central Catholic) claimed the sliver in the weight throw as the veteran tied his season high of 17.77 meters. It marked the third time this season he has surpassed the IC4A qualifying standard in that event and was tied for the ninth-longest throw in school history.
Senior
Nicolas Gentile (Sarver, Pa. / Freeport) posted the top qualifying time in the 800 meters in advance of Sunday's final. His time of 1:55.37 was also the ninth fastest in program history.

Fred Thompson (Turtle Creek, Pa. / Woodland Hills) notched the third-fastest qualifying time in the 500-meter run preliminaries Saturday as he stopped the clock in 1:06.83, a new career best.

Chris Carper (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) and freshman
Greg Miaczynski (Erie, Pa. / Collegiate Academy) both posted times (8.51 seconds, 8.56 seconds, respectively) that qualified them for the 60-meter hurdles final.
Junior
Malcolm Ayers (Clarksburg, Md. / Clarksburg) also qualified for the 200-meter final in 22.74 seconds.
The NEC Championships will conclude Sunday. Competition commences at Noon.
