Spanou's Accolades

Moon Township, Pa. – Robert Morris University women's basketball senior Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Nea Smyrni) was named to the College Sports Madness All-Mid Major Team earlier this week. The Greek native was named the Northeast Conference Player of the Year last week and was an All-NEC First Team pick.

Spanou is the fourth player in league history to earn Player of the Year honors twice, joining Jess Zinoble (Saint Francis U, 1998 & 2000), Susie Rowlyk (Mount St. Mary's, 1995 & 1994) and Vanessa Blair (Mount St. Mary's, 1991 & 1992) as the only players to achieve that feat. The native of Greece is the fourth RMU player in the last 11 years to be honored following Sugeiry Monsac (2004-05), Sade Logan (2007-08) and Angela Pace (2008-09). She has set eight RMU career records, two NEC career records and three RMU game records this season. In a four-year career, she is at the top of four NEC record lists, 12 RMU marks and is in the top-10 in 12 different Robert Morris record categories.

Spanou, also the 2011 NEC Rookie of the Year, was named to the All-NEC First Team to earn all-conference honors for four consecutive seasons including three straight first team appearances. Spanou leads the league in rebounding at 14.6 per game, the fourth season she's been the league leader. Her 19.5 points per game rank second among the league's players. Spanou is the only player in the NEC to make over half her shots, converting at 51.4 percent for the season. The 6'2" forward was also top-10 in the league in assists (6th, 124), blocked shots (8th, 33) and assist-to-turnover ratio (9th, 1.11) while leading the league in minutes (37.74).

The award caps off a career that has seen her rewrite the RMU, NEC and NCAA record books. Spanou is one of just seven players in Division I history to record 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 300 assists and 100 blocks. Along the way, she has collected 85 double-doubles, third most in NCAA history and an NEC record. Thirty-three of those double-doubles came consecutively, the second-longest streak of its kind in NCAA annals. With 1,537 career boards, she is sixth all-time in Division I while her 12.6 career rebounding average puts her tied for 11th.

Spanou and the Colonials have advanced to the NEC Tournament final with a 72-67 win over Bryant University Wednesday night. Robert Morris will play host to #3 Saint Francis University Sunday, March 16, at 3:00 p.m. The game will be carried on ESPNU.
