Chris Carper (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) broke a school record in the javelin as the
Robert Morris University men's outdoor track & field team opened its campaign this past weekend at the Wake Forest Open at Kentner Stadium.

Carper won the javelin with a toss of 72.13 meters. The mark broke his own school record, which was set last year at Wake Forest, and cleared the IC4A qualifying standard by over 13 meters. Carper now owns each of the top six throws in the javelin in school history.

Junior
Richard Njenga (Ephrata, Pa. / Ephrata) took second place in the triple jump as his mark of 14.46 meters was just .02 meters away from the winning distance in the event.

RMU's 4x400-meter relay team posted a strong finish in a time of 3:19.01, a mark that tied for third among the 20 teams that competed. Senior

Nicolas Gentile (Sarver, Pa. / Freeport) comprised the quartet of runners for the Colonials.

A number of the Colonials on the 4x400 relay squad also performed well in individual events.

Gentile placed among the top 10, in a field of 72, in the 800 meters with a time of 1:53.36, the fifth-fastest time in RMU history. He also added a career-best performance in the 1,500 meters as he stopped the clock in 4:00.89, the sixth-fastest time in school history.

Gerberich also ran in the same two individual races as Gentile. He posted a time of 1:54.03 in the 800, the eighth-fastest time in school history, and finished in 4:04.36 in the 1,500 meters.

Thompson placed 17th of 90 participants in the 400-meter dash in a time of 49.89 seconds. He also won his heat of the 800 in 1:53.52, a new career best as well as the sixth-fastest time in school history.

Sophomore
Mark Ayitey (East Pittsburgh, Pa. / Woodland Hills) placed ninth of 38 runners in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.82 seconds.

Junior
Shane Witmyer (West Lawn, Pa. / Wilson) netted a pair of top-10 finishes on the weekend. He was sixth in the long jump (6.91 meters) and ninth in the triple jump (13.45 meters).

Redshirt senior
Steve Mitchell (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Pittsburgh Central Catholic) joined Witmyer in grabbing a pair of top-10 finishes at Wake Forest. He was seventh in the shot put (15.60 meters) and 10th in the hammer throw (50.42 meters).
