Robert Morris Places Sixth at Morgan State Legacy Meet

The Robert Morris University men's track & field team continued its 2014 campaign Saturday by claiming sixth at the Morgan State Legacy Meet in Baltimore, Md.

The Colonials compiled 45.50 points. Maryland-Eastern Shore won the team title with 91.33 points, with VCU (90), UMBC (65.50), Howard (63.50) and Coppin State (51.33) rounding out the top five. Following Robert Morris in the top 10 out of 26 teams that scored was the host Bears (43), Hampton (40), American (39) and George Mason (29).

Highlighting the meet for RMU was junior Richard Njenga (Ephrata, Pa. / Ephrata), who finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 14.88 meters (48'10"). Thanks to his distance, Njenga qualified for the IC4A/ECAC Championships in the event and also ranks second in the Northeast Conference so far this season, behind only LIU Brooklyn's Amir Armstrong (14.89 meters).

Senior Steve Mitchell (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Pittsburgh Central Catholic) scored in both the shot put and hammer throw for RMU, finishing in fourth and fifth, respectively.

In the shot put, Mitchell put forth a toss of 16.62 meters (54'6.50"), a season best, to claim fourth and tally five points. He added a final tally of 48.52 meters (159'2") in the hammer as one of three student-athletes to score in the event to garner fifth and compile four points.

Also scoring the hammer throw for the Colonials was senior Kelton Mehls (Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern) and sophomore Nick Delmonaco (Oakmont, Pa. / Riverview). Mehls placed seventh at 40.55 meters (133'0"), while Delmonaco earned eighth at 39.94 meters (131'0").

The duo of Mehls and Delmonaco also scored in the discus, finishing fifth and seventh, respectively. Mehls posted a toss of 45.53 meters (149'4"), while Delmonaco compiled a final tally of 44.96 meters (147'6").

In the track events, sophomore Richard Lednak (Apollo, Pa. / Kiski Area) earned bronze in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as one of two Colonials to score in the event. Lednak crossed the finish line with a time of 9:56.84 to garner six points, while senior Michael Molchany (Ephrata, Pa. / Ephrata) placed fifth with a time of 10:16.94.

Scoring for the Colonials in the 800-meter were freshman Drew Gerberich (Myerstown, Pa. / ELCO) and senior Nicolas Gentile (Sarver, Pa. / Freeport). Gerberich posted a time of 1:52.77 to claim seventh, while Gentile was right behind, finishing eighth with a time of 1:53.57.

The Colonials will continue their 2014 season with their final meet before the 2014 Northeast Conference Championships by taking part in the Red Flash Open Saturday, April 26, in Loretto, Pa.
