RMU Wraps Up Regular Season at Red Flash Open

Ayers wins 100-meter dash, Birk takes home individual title in 800-meter run for Colonials

Moon Township, Pa. – In its final tuneup before the 2014 Northeast Conference Outdoor Championships next weekend at the RMU Island Sports Center, the Robert Morris University men's track & field squad had a limited number of participants take part in the Red Flash Open Saturday in Loretto, Pa.

Leading the way for the Colonials Saturday was freshman Andrew Birk (Columbia, Pa. / Hempfield), who won the individual title in the 800-meter run thanks to a time of 4:20.14.

In other track events for RMU, junior Malcolm Ayers (Clarksburg, Md. / Clarksburg) won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.50 seconds, while junior Jones Twenefor (Philadelphia, Pa. / Father Judge) claimed bronze in the race at 11.74 seconds.

In the 3,000-meter, freshmen Kevin Dailey (Johnstown, Pa. / Westmont Hilltop) and Matthew Haupt (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Our Lady of Sacred Heart) finished second and third, respectively, thanks to times of 9:33.12 and 9:33.71. The duo were joined in the event by freshman Marshall Bruce (Beaver, Pa. / Beaver Area), who crossed the finish line in 10:03.17 to claim fifth.

In the field events, freshman Brandon Kmonk (South Park, Pa. / South Park) participated in the javelin and pole vault. He finished sixth in the javelin (40.84 meters) and third in the pole vault (3.55 meters). Freshman Justin Baker (New Enterprise, Pa. / North Bedford), meanwhile, claimed fourth in the high jump thanks to a leap of 1.75 meters.

For the second time in program history Robert Morris will host the NEC Outdoor Championships, which take place Saturday, May 3, and Sunday, May 4, at the RMU Island Sports Center on Neville Island in Pittsburgh, Pa.
