RMU Places 13th at Colonial Relays

Mitchell wins individual title in hammer throw, 4x800-meter relay squad establishes a new school record

The Robert Morris University men's outdoor track & field team continued its 2014 outdoor campaign Saturday by finishing 13th out of 42 schools at the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Va.

The Colonials compiled 26 points. Bucknell won the team championship with 101.5 points, and Rutgers (87.20), Virginia Tech (74), Shippensburg (68) and Iona (51) rounded out the top five.

Highlighting the meet for RMU was senior Steve Mitchell (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Pittsburgh Central Catholic), who won the individual title in the hammer throw and finished third in the shot put, and the 4x800-meter relay squad, which claimed bronze and established a new school record in the event.

Mitchell posted a toss of 52.84 meters (173'04") in the hammer throw to record the top distance among collegiate competitors and earn 10 points while garnering six points in the shot put and earning bronze thanks to a final throw of 15.97 meters (52'4.75").

The RMU 4x800-meter relay team consisted of senior Fred Thompson (Turtle Creek, Pa. / Woodland Hills), sophomore Drew Gerberich (Myerstown, Pa. / ELCO) and seniors Dorian Rumble (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Penn Hills) and Nicolas Gentile (Sarver, Pa. / Freeport) and crossed the finish line with a time of 7:37.14. The time qualified the squad for the IC4A/ECAC Championships and trailed only Virginia Tech (7:30.68) and UMBC (7:36.97).

Gerberich also took part in the non-seeded portion of the 1,500-meter run, claiming the individual title with a time of 3:59.54, while Gentile finished 13th in the 800-meter with a time of 1:52.51.

Also scoring for the Colonials was senior Kelton Mehls (Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern), who finished fifth in the discus thanks to a final tally of 44.62 meters (146'5").
